A few weeks ago I was on a Melbourne train when I overheard a man talking about knives (and more) — and it was genuinely terrifying in the moment. Not abstract concern, not awareness. Full-body “this is not okay” fear.
I reported it at the time using the number provided when I texted a friend in panic, but the response was less than ideal. That’s stayed with me. Not just the incident itself, but the gap between what we assume safety reporting looks like in real time, and what actually happens when you need it.
I was so upset by it all, that I made a vid on TikTok the next day.
By sheer fluke, I heard a snippet of talkback radio today discussing safety on Melbourne trains, and it brought it all back up again and you know your girl had something to say.
Anyway, I called talkback radio today. Apparently I’m old now. 🙃
