The Marrickville Marauders is a fencing club run by nationally accredited coach, Jess Brooks, at Marrickville PCYC on Thursday 5.00 pm -7.30 pm and Saturday 9.00 am - 11.30 am. This club focuses on developing young fencers from the age of 5 onwards in a fun, challenging and supportive environment. Fencing is a safe and exhilarating sport that develops coordination, balance, agility and focus. Fenc
ing is often considered the ‘physical chess’, which requires the mind and body to work together in order to succeed! Our primary focus is sabre but we are in the process of introducing a beginners’ foil class. Our training structure1. Warm up: Involves popular children’s games with a fencing interpretation. Warm up is designed to be fun and prepare the mind and body for the training ahead!2. Footwork: This part of the training program is often done as part of the warm up. Footwork is a fundamental part of fencing training as it critical to be able to ‘attack’ and ‘retreat’ at great speed and at the right time.3. Drills: This involves both offensive and defensive ‘blade work’ combined with footwork, which produces the basic building blocks of a sword fight.4. Bouts: The final part of the training session is dedicated to free fencing where students have the chance to put into practice all that they’ve learnt! 5. Individual Lessons: One-on-one lessons are often given by a coach during training sessions to the more advanced students. Contact Jess Brooks (Head Coach) on 0415 490 823 or [email protected]
