Your form matters more than the number on the plate!

Ego lifting looks impressive for about 3 seconds. Then your back reminds you about it for 3 weeks… that’s not what we want.

What’s more important is that your form is correct. Feet planted, back set, core engaged, full control and focus through the movement.

Reach for lighter weights until you have perfected your form. You will build more strength by activating the right muscle fibres, and you’ll be able to keep training consistently instead of nursing injuries at home.

Your workout starts before you pick up a weight. What you eat 1-2 hours before training decides whether you’re going to be able to push hard or just get through it.

Here’s the formula:
- Carbs for fuel (banana, oats, toast, rice cakes, fruit)
- A little protein to prime your muscles (Greek yoghurt, eggs, protein shake)
- Water to make sure you’re hydrated
- Add in a pre-workout if you want (we have some great options at the gym)

Short on time? A banana and a glass of water 30 minutes before your workout beats training on empty.

Show up fuelled and leave nothing in the tank. 💪🏼

Warm up
Rower or bike: 5 minutes
Arm circles: 30 seconds
Leg swings: 30 seconds

Workout
Romanian Deadlifts: 3 x 10
Goblet Squats: 3 x 10
Dumbbell Bench Press: 3 x 10
Bent Over Rows: 3 x 10
Shoulder Press: 3 x 10
Plank: 3 x 1 minute

Choose your weights for each exercise based on your strength and rest in between sets to support maximum output.

Our surf training group classes are built to improve your performance in the surf. Whether you want to feel fitter or more confident out there, improve your endurance, chase bigger waves or want more waves per session, training on land is what gets you surfing better and staying out there longer.

Stronger paddling means more waves. Better mobility means smoother pop-ups. A solid core means you stay steady on the board.

Classes are every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 4.30pm at Plus Fitness Margaret River. All levels welcome. Book in on the app! 🏄‍♂️

Ready to improve your squats? Here are the three most common squat mistakes we see on the gym floor:

1. Heels lifting off the ground - Your weight should sit through your mid foot. If your heels rise, work on ankle mobility or slow down the descent.

2. Knees caving in - Think of screwing your feet into the floor and a wall pressed against the insides of your knees. We don’t want to see those knees pulling in!

3. Rushing the rep - Control on the way down, power on the way up. The lowering phase is where the strength gets built. Slow it down.

Core strength isn’t achieved by doing crunches until you cry. Here are 3 moves that actually build functional strength:

1. Dead bugs – Lie on your back, opposite arm and leg extend together while your lower back stays glued to the floor. Focus on control over speed.

2. Plank with shoulder taps – Forces your core to resist rotation, not just hold still. That’s the strength you use every day.

3. Pallof press – Stand side-on to a cable or band, press straight out and resist the twist. Underrated and brutally effective.

3 sets of 8 to 12, slow down and focus on control over reps.

Nutrition is half the equation in your fitness program. Get your greens and protein in with this simple, nutritious smoothie!

You’ll need:
1 banana
1 cup frozen mango
1 cup fresh spinach
1 cup fresh kale
1 scoop protein powder (we used ATP Noway Vanilla protein powder - one of our favourites available at the gym)
1 Tbsp h**p seeds
Milk of your choice

Blend it all together and enjoy before or after your workout. 💪🏼
