From 1 October 2026, businesses can no longer apply surcharges to card payments, including eftpos, Mastercard, Visa and American Express transactions.

However it is important that our customers are aware that the banks will still continue to charge businesses a merchant fee per transaction, depending on the merchant and method of payment.

While Life Cycle Bikes does not charge customers a surcharge on card payments, we want to again remind everyone that every time you pay with a card, especially with "tap and go" it costs businesses, especially small businesses with less negotiating power, a merchant fee (around 0.5-3% depending on merchant).

In the past, some businesses chose to pass on these fees to customers paying with a card at point of sale to help offset these costs. But from 1 October 2026 businesses will have to factor these costs into their total operating costs and pass the extra cost to all customers, regardless of payment type.

This is why we have been encouraging awareness of this issue and ask our customers to pay with direct bank transfer or with cash where and when possible. Doing this helps small, local businesses like ourselves to reduce there merchant fee overheads.

Don't forget to ask us about a discount if you pay with direct bank transfers or cash! We would rather the money stay in your pocket than go to the banks.
