They don’t make ‘em like this anymore. A true legend of Aviation in Australia. And he helped countless people through the maze of aviation theory and exams. Rest in Peace Bob Tait.

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news that Bob Tait passed away quietly yesterday, just before 5:00 pm, with family present.

Bob was much more than the name on the front of a book. He was a teacher, mentor, storyteller, pilot, author and friend to so many people across the aviation community. His ability to explain difficult things in a simple, practical and memorable way helped generations of pilots through their training, exams and flying careers.

For many of us, Bob’s books were part of our own aviation journey. For others, Bob himself was the voice at the front of the classroom, the calm explanation when something did not make sense, or the encouraging words that helped them keep going.

We know this news will be felt deeply by many students, pilots, instructors, schools and aviation families across Australia.

Paul, Maree and the Bob Tait Team would like to thank everyone who has supported Bob, his family, and the business over many years. It has been our privilege to continue Bob’s work, and we remain committed to protecting and carrying forward his legacy with the same care, honesty and dedication that he built it on.

We would also like to reassure everyone that Bob Tait’s Aviation Theory School and the Bob Tait Store remain open and operating as normal.

Thank you, Bob, for everything you gave to aviation.

Blue skies, mate.

Some places carry more weight than others.

Look closely at that cliff face. Those bands aren’t just colour — they’re chapters.

The coarse conglomerate records ancient rivers crossing a Gondwanan floodplain. Below that, coal — compressed remains of cool-temperate swamps from when this part of Australia drifted near the southern margins of Gondwana, some 300 million years ago. Above it all, hundreds of metres of sandstone now standing as sheer vertical cliffs over open savannah.
Swamps below. Stone above. Three hundred million years in a single rock face.

The Djungan people know this place as Ngarrabullgan. Their connection to this country runs deep — far deeper than the coal seams beneath your feet.

In 1921, seventy-five miners died in a single underground explosion at the Mt Mulligan colliery. The worst industrial disaster in Queensland history. The chimney still stands. The silence is still loud.

You need altitude to hold all of this at once.

Congratulations to Rob Statton who won today’s Tom McDonald Spot Landing Competition! And then promptly gave away his gift basket to the runner up, James Nancarrow! How simply sweet and generous 🥰
13 entrants participated in the comp this morning in a variety of aircraft including 8 entries in Club 172 LHI. A lovely morning for spectators and entrants alike and we absolutely jagged the weather, although it turns out it’s harder to land on the spot in Mareeba than it is in Atherton, thanks to the windshear.
A massive Thankyou to sponsors AON Insurance, who supplied the prize and also beautiful cupcakes for morning tea. Thankyou also to Bill Owen and Nathan Bridge for the use of their hangar.
Videos to come.
Finally, Thankyou to John Martin who accidentally became the offical media rep and took all the great photos and videos!
