A great article by Sifu Mark Spence on the topic of relaxation
Okay, relax. What's next?
When we find something that is difficult we may assume that we do not fully understand the process involved. After I have told a student to relax for the hundredth time they may respond with, “I am relaxed, it’s still not working!”
A student of mine from another lineage that did not particularly focus, or you could say 'obsess', on relaxation the way that we do in Chu Shong Tin Wing Chun once said to me, “Look, just tell me how you are doing this!” He had trained for more than ten years in Wing Chun and was quite competent, however after maybe six lessons with me, his power generation was still going nowhere.
He was going through the conundrum that all in our lineage encounter. We think we know how to relax, or more to the point we cannot fully believe that no muscular exertion at all is necessary. Surely a little can only help? Frustrated by a lack of progress we assume that more information is required. From that point we wander off in search of the missing bit, which after many hours we find was in front of us all along.
Over many years, dozens of my students travelled to Hong Kong to train under Chu Shong Tin. I always made a point of asking them what they learned from their visit. Nine times out of ten they had the same response; “You have to really, really relax.” It was hard to resist saying that I had told them that many times.
The problem is that in solving problems we tend to rush through the simple stuff to get to the 'answer'. We think ‘okay relax, got that, what’s next?’ Eventually we return to relaxation and learn more about the process. However, it takes some time for the process of relaxation to take effect. Being naturally impatient creatures we become frustrated, which makes things worse. The logical, analytical part of our brain (almost the opposite of the Nin Tao point we should be using) takes over and starts searching for the missing piece of logic that should provide us with super powers like CST.
To bring students back on track I often quote CST on this issue. As usual he hit the nail on the head with this remark.
"Wing Chun is not so complicated; it’s actually quite simple…. just really very hard to do!"
