Alcocks congratulates Melbourne's Steve Mifsud who has won his seventh Australian National Billiards Championship at the Yarraville Club in Melbourne. In a thrilling five-hour final against Michael Pearson (NSW), Steve twice came from behind in the final session before making a break of 55 unfinished to pip Michael by 26 points, 1128-1102. Commiserations to Michael, who played wonderfully well and made the high break of the tournament with 216 in the final session to establish a commanding but ultimately insufficient lead.

Steve, who previously won the title in 2003 2012 2022 2023 2024 and 2025, has now won 27 Senior Australian Championships in billiards and snooker, comprising ten Australian National Snooker Championships, seven Australian Open Snooker Championships, seven Australian National Billiards Championships, and three Australian Open Billiards Championships, as well as the 2002 IBSF World Snooker Championship in Cairo, Egypt. In winning his 27th title Steve has eclipsed the wonderful record of Matthew Bolton (WA) who won his 26 championship titles between 2000 and 2019.

Steve's own billiard table is an Alcock & Co Squatters Favourite model in Tasmanian Blackwood dating from the 1860s. Well played Steve, Alcocks congratulates you on your outstanding record over so many years.

Alcocks custom design expertise attracts clients looking for a billiard table of unusual or original design. During 2024 we were asked to create a truly visionary custom design table, with instructions that the main design features should include:

• Huge richly polished cushion rails with caps nearly three times the width of a conventional rail
• Internalised pockets
• An undercarriage consisting of two massive hollow rectangles in steel, chromed and polished to a mirror finish

Our clients were able to show patience in addition to their original vision as we completed this technically demanding project. On installation they were delighted at the result, as we were delighted by the achievement. This truly unique centrepiece is a stunning example of architectural approach in design coupled with modern bespoke craftsmanship, carried out in close collaboration with luxury interior design studio Mark Alexander Design Artistry.

Alcocks donated a sterling silver trophy by Walker & Hall to the winner of the first Victorian Amateur Billiards Championship run by the Amateur Billiards Association of Victoria in 1905 at Alcocks Elizabeth Street match hall. The championship was won by Arthur H Tricks who beat CA Haley 1000-982 in a very close final. High break for the tournament was 68 by Tricks.

The trophy was auctioned recently by Leonard Joel Auctions and made AUD1300 plus buyer's premium. The inscription reads:

The first Victorian Amateur Billiards Championship was organised and run by Alcocks in 1904 at their Elizabeth St match room. This event provided the impetus for the formation of the Amateur Billiards Association of Victoria, which for unclear reasons was dissolved in the 1920s and replaced by the Victorian Amateur Billiards Association with much the same personnel. More recently the association was renamed to the Victorian Billiards & Snooker Association - vbsa.
