πŸ† Hidden Treasures Honour Roll – Part 2

Well done to everyone who guessed it.

No surprises here...

Our second recipient on the 2025 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll is...

Joan Hart

Well, duh!

For those who missed yesterday's post, the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll recognises outstanding rural women volunteers who make an extraordinary contribution to their communities.

And honestly, this award feels like it was made for someone like Joan.

Player. Coach. Manager. Official. Volunteer. Life Member. World Cup gold medallist.

For more than 25 years, Joan has been one of the driving forces behind Maitland Hockey. Whether she's on the field, supporting players, running the canteen, coordinating bookings or putting her hand up when something needs doing, Joan has dedicated countless hours to the sport and community she loves.

A Life Member of Maitland Hockey Inc, Joan was awarded the Karen Kennedy Award for Female Masters Player of the Year in 2024 and was part of the inaugural Australian Over-70s World Cup team that won gold in New Zealand.

Thankfully, while this award recognises a Hidden Treasure, Joan isn't particularly hidden from us. She's usually at the turf doing the work of about three people and somehow still finding time to play hockey.

Congratulations Joan on this incredibly well-deserved recognition. πŸ’šπŸ‘

At this point, the Maitland Hockey pool room is absolutely overflowing.

It seems our number one pastime lately is winning awards, with playing hockey a close second.

If I quit my day job, I could probably write appreciation posts for the rest of the year. The reality is there just aren't enough hours to recognise all the amazing people who make this club what it is. Maybe I'm biased, but Maitland Hockey is overflowing with good people.

If you see Joan and/or Ros on Saturday, be sure to say congratulations and thank you. We're incredibly lucky to have not one, but two Hidden Treasures in our hockey family. πŸ’šπŸ‘

πŸ† OK, so just for something different... Maitland Hockey has more award winners!

We're incredibly proud to share that Maitland Hockey has not one, but TWO women recognised on the 2025 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.

The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll celebrates the invaluable contribution of rural women volunteers who quietly give so much to their communities. Nominated by members of their community and recognised by the NSW Government, the awards are presented by the Hon. Jodie Harrison MP, Minister for Women.

To be honest, we doubt anyone in the Maitland hockey community will be surprised by the names.

These are the people who turn up early, stay late, put their hand up, and somehow keep everything running while asking for very little in return.

First up, it is of course...

Ros Sherlock

For more than 30 years, Ros has dedicated countless hours to Maitland Hockey and Hunter Hockey Association, serving in numerous volunteer roles including President of both organisations.

As Maitland Hockey's Junior Development Officer, coach, manager, umpire, organiser and all-round hockey champion, Ros has helped shape generations of young players and ensured the future of hockey in our region remains strong.

Her contribution extends far beyond the hockey field. Following a distinguished 46-year teaching career, Ros has continued to dedicate herself to supporting young people and her community through both education and sport.

Ros is one of those rare people whose impact can be measured not just in years of service, but in the thousands of lives she has influenced along the way.

Congratulations Ros on this incredibly well-deserved recognition. πŸ’šπŸ‘

Now, I'm going to keep you all in suspense as to who our second Hidden Treasures Honour Roll recipient is until tomorrow...

Featured Match Report: Rams-Black vs Rustlers

If top-of-the-table clashes are supposed to showcase the very best of hockey, then this one delivered.

Rustlers arrived with the unusual luxury of three substitutes, a rarity for the side, while Rams-Black came ready to stamp their authority on the competition. From the opening whistle, the Rams applied relentless pressure, forcing Rustlers into some desperate defensive efforts.

Despite spending long periods under attack, Rustlers showed they could turn defence into offence in an instant. Standing tall behind it all was goalkeeper Georgette McLean-Phillips, who produced a string of crucial saves to keep her side in the contest.

The pressure eventually told in the second quarter when Haley found the back of the net to give Rams a deserved 1-0 lead.

The game continued in much the same fashion after halftime. Rams attacked with pace and youthful energy, while Rustlers relied on calm heads, experience, and the familiar intuition that comes from a side featuring two sets of sisters and a mother-daughter combination. Their persistence paid off late in the third quarter when Jo McGarry finished off one of several penetrating runs into the circle to level the scores at 1-1.

The final quarter lived up to the occasion. Haley struck again to restore the Rams' lead, but Rustlers responded almost immediately, moving the ball quickly up the field before Jo McGarry found the equaliser once more. In the blink of an eye, the contest had gone from 1-1 to 2-2 and the crowd was fully invested.

With the game finely balanced, Rams surged forward and were rewarded with a penalty corner. The initial strike spilled loose in a crowded circle and Airlie reacted quickest, showing great composure to slot the rebound past Georgette and give Rams a crucial 3-2 advantage.

Rustlers still had one final opportunity. In the dying seconds, Renee Maloney connected sweetly with a strike that narrowly missed the target, coming agonisingly close to finding a late equaliser.

As the final whistle sounded, Rams-Black had secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory, but both teams played their part in a high-quality contest that showcased why they sit at the top of the ladder.

Rams-Black 3 defeated Rustlers 2.

πŸ‘ Round 10 – And We Are Back! πŸ‘

After a couple of weeks away, the Women's Competition returns this Saturday and what a way to kick things off!

Our featured game for round 10 serves up a genuine top-of-the-table blockbuster, with first place on the line and two of the competition's heavyweights ready to go toe-to-toe, Rams-Black (1st) v Rustlers (2nd).

Bring your winter woollies, pack a blanket, grab a hot drink and settle in. It'll be cold. It'll be frosty. But on the field it'll be fast, fierce and ferociously
contested. Both sides have spent the season setting the pace, and now they'll battle it out for the right to claim top spot heading into the second half of the season.

Expect plenty of skill, plenty of intensity, and absolutely no one giving an inch.

πŸΏπŸ‘ Saturday night hockey doesn't get much better than this.

πŸ† MAITLAND HOCKEY HAS BEEN NAMED HOCKEY NSW'S COMMUNITY CLUB OF THE YEAR FOR 2025! πŸ†

We're incredibly proud of this recognition, which celebrates the work our club has done to grow participation and strengthen community connections through our junior programs, Hookin2Hockey initiatives and welcoming club culture.

2025 was a breakout year for Maitland Hockey.

Our junior ranks continued to thrive, our senior competitions grew, and more people than ever before found their way to a hockey field in Maitland. Whether they were picking up a stick for the first time or dusting one off after a lengthy retirement, people joined our club and found a place to belong.

But growth doesn't happen by accident.

It comes from creating a club where people feel seen, valued and supported.

A club that listens.

A club that nurtures.

A club that grows.

A club that makes people feel like they belong.

That culture is what makes Maitland Hockey special, and we're not done yet.

In 2026 we've continued to push boundaries. We launched our inaugural Pride Round, continue to proudly host NAIDOC Round each year, and built on initiatives such as the Trish McMillan Round and Trish McMillan Cup, which raised more than $2,000 for pancreatic cancer research while honouring one of our own.

Some clubs play hockey.

We build community.

This award belongs to every player, coach, umpire, volunteer, committee member, parent, supporter, sponsor and occasional sideline expert who helps make Maitland Hockey what it is.

We're not the biggest club.

We're not the wealthiest club.

We don't have the flashiest facilities.

And for a long time, some may have thought of us as Newcastle hockey's poorer cousin.

Not anymore.

We're building something special.

Maitland Hockey. Like no other. πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜πŸ‘Š

Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got important business to get back to... growing hockey, building community, making people feel like they belong and other such award-winning activities. πŸ‘πŸ–€β€οΈ
