September is Su***de Prevention Month, and 10th September is World Su***de Prevention Day.
Roller derby brings together a vast mix of people, and for a lot of us this sport and community have been a genuine lifeline.
So it feels important to say something real, not just add a hashtag and move on.
Checking in on your mates is great, but on its own it's often not enough. Real prevention means making mental health support easier to access, and breaking away from the shame that stops people asking for help before things get to crisis point.
A few small things we can all do:
๐ Ask twice. If someone says "I'm fine," a gentle "no, really, how are you going?" can open the door.
๐ Listen without trying to fix it straight away. Sometimes people just need to be heard.
๐ Watch your language. Someone we lose this way didn't commit a crime, so it is best to use language like "died by" rather than "committed." Small shift, but it matters.
๐ Normalise talking about mental health the same way we'd talk about a rolled ankle or a bad skate day. It's just part of being human.
๐ Know the numbers, even if you never need them.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out:

Look after each other out there. Our derby family is stronger when nobody has to struggle alone.
