Macquarie University Rugby Football Club

Macquarie University Rugby Football Club Macquarie University Rugby Football Club (MURFC) is the oldest sporting club at Macquarie University. You DO NOT have to be a student to play for Macquarie.

Established in 1967 and currently competing in the NSW Suburban Rugby Competition, MURFC attracts all levels of players from ex-grade players right through to first timers. Due to our association with the university we are a relatively young club that combines a good mix of enthusiasm and experience. Whilst at least 50% of the squad is made up of past and present students there is also a large rep

resentation of locally based players within the squad. Based at the university sports fields we are fortunate to have access to some of the best fields and facilities in the Sydney Suburban Rugby competition. Whilst rugby is the main attraction we also promote a healthy social calendar at the club, with New Beacons Night – the most mysterious night of most of our lives – Ladies Day and Old Boys Day – a chance to show off in front of friends and family – and the Poker night – a chance to win some money to go towards registration fees. This and many more functions will be happening this year at MURFC. If you’re keen to play some good footy, meet some new mates and enjoy a few beverages then Macquarie Rugby is the club for you! In 2022 we are running Two grades in the NSW Suburban Rugby 4th Division Competition. In addition to that, we’re also hosting a Colts (under 21s) team, and 2 women’s 7s teams. If you are interested in playing Rugby or just getting fit come down and join MURFC. We train from 6:30 to 8:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Campbell Fields.

Some sad news about a club legend from Graham Mackie of the recent passing of Phil Friend.

"Just to let everyone know Club Stalwart Club Captain & First Grade Captain Phil Friend passed way last Sunday after a long illness
Phil played approx 300 games for the club starting in 1972 & was the glue that held the club together in the 1970's & 80's packing down in the front row against some of the best in 1st Division
Off the field he was a born leader & the great spirit in the club revolved around his enormous personality
Phil was the best rugby mate a person could ever have
He lived on the Central Coast & was heavily involved in rugby administration up until a few years ago
One of the best ever to wear a Macquarie Uni rugby jersey
Phil Friend RIP" - Graham Mackie
