Connections is a Rugby League team that will be competing in Indigenous Rugby League Carnivals.
The name "Connections" was chosen to highlight the strong bonds we share with our players, families, communities, and culture.
These connections are an important part of our identity and help bring players together. They are also key to our mental, emotional and spiritual health, including positive emotions, good physical health, strong relationships and a sense of purpose and belonging. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, it also includes cultural wellbeing.
Our goal is to support the Social and Emotional Wellbeing of Indigenous men aged 18 to 40, especially those who may be facing challenges in silence.
We are aware that Indigenous men face significant mental health challenges, particularly in rural and regional areas like Mackay. Mental health services are often underutilised or inaccessible due to long waiting lists and the stigma surrounding mental illness can prevent individuals from seeking help.
Through rugby league, we aim to create a platform where these men can engage in meaningful activities while addressing the serious mental health gaps that exist within this age group.
