4pm onwards. Cheap drinks. Free sausage sizzle. Worlds Best Prawns Raffle. Warm as toast inside and we’ve just purchased some new gas heaters for out on the deck.

LEON IS OUT OF HOSPITAL AND BACK HOME
Great news that Leon is back and looking good. This is his new custom made helmet which he must use when he’s up and about. He decided not to go with the Viking Helmet, it was too heavy. This one is as light as a feather.

MAJOR FISHING COMP NUMBER FIVE
SPONSORED BY GREAT OTWAY CONSTRUCTION

Sunday 20th September, the comp runs from 6am until the deadline of 12.30pm. Weigh-in starts at midday. It’s free to enter for members and all competitors get a free roast lunch. Prizes are awarded for first, second and third in both the junior and senior categories. Juniors must be under the age of 18. You can only weigh in one fish each, so anyone can win on the day, and it’s environmentally friendly. Come and have a crack. It’s great fun.

Weigh-in, lunch, refreshments and presentations will all be held at Stribling Reserve, downstairs near the canteen and booth.

There’s a big gap until the next comp as we aren’t running Winter Comps this year because we don’t have a clubhouse.

Image: This is Zac Roydhouse who is fast becoming the shark-catching king of the pier. Last month he caught a huge school shark and this month he caught this gigantic 7 gill shark. It must have been a tough gig hauling that up onto the pier. :

SWEERS ISLAND FISHING TRIP

We are all back safely from our road trip up to the Gulf Of Carpentaria and it was a ripper. It took us 6 days to get to Burketown and 7 days to get home because we went a different way and had two nights in Mt Isa. We stayed in outback pubs each night but made a big mistake by arriving at each pub far too early in the day. Being small outback towns we could drive around and see everything very quickly so we would go to our pub, have lunch with a round of beers, then another round and another etc etc. When it was time to go up to our rooms we found that our feet weren’t working properly. They weren’t doing what they were told. I think it was the dust or maybe the altitude.
Anyway next year we will try and remedy this issue by arriving much later and keeping out of the dust. We finally arrived in Burketown and flew out to Sweers Island where we stayed for 8 nights. The weather and fishing was exceptional. In the past we have either released our catch or given it to the chef to cook for us but this year we had two vehicles with 3 freezers so we were able to keep the best fish, fillet them and freeze them all to bring home. The total size of our freezers was 120 litres and they were full to the brim so we will be eating a lot of fish over the next couple of months.
As is the tradition we ran a fishing competition up there and the rules get changed every year, much like the AFL. I will explain it all along with the results next month.

Images: Clive Goldsworthy caught this huge Spanish Mackerel. He’s being photo bombed by a bloke called China. It was awarded the best fish of the trip and after arriving home Clive while attending a social function wore the pocket out on his trousers by taking his phone out every ten seconds to show off this photo. It was a great effort landing this fish especially when he was bottom fishing with only small snapper hooks and only 30 pound line;

The red fish they call Nannygai up north but they are actually in the same family as Red Emperor, the brown fish are called Golden Snapper and are also in that same family;
This is China with a big Cobia which was awarded the equal best fish of the trip;
This is Clive on our last morning of the trip after our final outback pub stay.
