The Importance of enjoying your workout

As trainers we always encourage you to always have fun with your workouts!!

For some people workouts can seem like a chore, a task or something that requires a massive amount of discipline to do.

However if you genuinely enjoy your workout and have copious amounts of fun you will be more likely to keep going and keep having a good time and even reach those fitness goals sooner!

My task to all of you is it to list down three things that make your workouts fun and enjoyable!! ⬇️

How to optimise your push up

Have you ever heard your coach say something similar to “hips low” or “straight line from head to toe”? Yeah me too!!

When performing a push up it is really important to remember these few things

1. Make sure your hands are directly under your shoulders, this will give you the right positioning throughout the whole movement

2. By keeping your core tight and flutes activated this will allow your body to move as one or live as a plank (straight line toe head to toe”

3. Keep your elbows at a 45 degree angle from your body. This position is safest to avoid and unnecessary shoulder strains

4. Similar to #2 you want to avoid leading the push up with your shoulders and arching your back

5. And finally as mentioned before keeping your core tight will aid in keeping your body straight

These are 5 simple pointers to help you nail your push up, and who knows you might even start clapping behind your back soon enough 😉

Decided to sneak in a couple sets of this movement this morning, strict overhead press.

I’ve personally always had trouble with this one however it is good to see how smoothly these reps were done

Something a little different, decided to do a couple of compound movements this morning.

This one in particular felt really smooth and strong. Strict over head press

What is progressive overload

Have you ever heard your trainings talk about “Progressive Overload” and not have a clue what they are talking about?

Sometimes understanding this can be quite confusing. So I’ll keep it simple.

Progressive overload is when you GRADUALLY increase the weight, frequency or number of reps in your strength exercises.

An example could be one week performing 6 reps on your back squat then the next you perform 8 and so on. However there is a point that you should be increasing the weight instead of just the reps. Personally I know I’m at that point when I ask myself how difficult it was on a scale from 1-10. If I found that it was a 5 or below I’d increase my weight.

Picking the right weight for you

Ok picture this, you walk into a class and the coach explains how do to the exercises in your session, you go over and collect what equipment you need but you get stuck and confused, you don’t know what weight to pick up. 🤨

This is very common among gym classes but it is nothing to worry as I have a few key points to remember 🔑

⬇️⬇️⬇️

- Your Weight will decide if the exercise is safe and how effective it is. Don’t go so heavy where you compromise your safety and risk injury. However you do not want to pick a weight so light that you do not feel anything working. 💪

- Technique over everything, similar to my last point. You want to pick a weight that does not throw your form out the window. Technique and form comes first 📖

- Start with a lighter weight when learning, that way you can nail the correct technique. It is also important to assess how you feel over the next two days. Are you feeling soreness in the correct spots? Are you feeling pain in places you shouldn’t? 🤕

- When picking your weight you must keep in mind we do not always want to work until failure. Keep a few repetitions in your pocket, remember that weight only gets heavier as time goes on 😏

So next time you are in your gym class, take a minute to remember these points and pick a weight for you that is safe but also challenging.

The benefits of having a strong core

Do you feel like your core is lacking behind with strength?

Are you confused to why you hear trainers say “brace your core” with a back squat?

Have a strong core in day to day life is much more Important than you may think. As you strengthen your core through exercises it will help

- improve your balance
- Improve your stability
- Prevent injury with heavy lifts
- Spare your spine from excessive load
- Allow you to perform at your best
