It’s always better to focus on how you feel and look than the numbers on the scale.

Firstly, fat tissue is less dense than muscle tissue so it occupies more space under the skin. 1kg of fat has more volume and will therefore appear larger (by about 25%) than muscle tissue.

Secondly, muscle tissue uses up more calories than fat tissue per day, regardless of how much exercise you do. The basal metabolic rate is higher for someone the same age and weight if their muscle percentage is higher. So you might say muscles burn fat.

If you’re hoping to look better, and lose some fat, you might be best off focusing on getting stronger and feeling better (which is great for your health) and you’ll find the fat loss comes as a byproduct.

After 2 months back in the gym (and just before his 81st birthday) Noel just got his first chin up (in a long while, not ever).
Since rejoining he’s been finishing every session with assisted negative chin ups and getting stronger little by little.
Progression comes from consistency no matter what’s holding you back
