Dear Families,
Department of Health has advised a case of whooping cough has been diagnosed within our student community. Please read the following important information:-
• Whooping cough usually starts like a cold with a runny nose, mild fever, and a cough.
• We recommend vigilance for the next 21 days to ensure that anyone with any symptom of a respiratory infection such as cough, cold, runny nose, stay home from school
• Whooping cough vaccination is part of routine childhood immunisations, with a booster available via school-based programs in year 7. In schools where this has not yet occurred for 2024 families may wish to consider accessing this via their GP or pharmacy
• Please see the attached factsheet with immunisation recommendations for other age groups.
Exclusion from school:
• If they are being treated with antibiotics, they should stay away until a five-day course of an appropriate antibiotic has been completed.
• Following a course of antibiotics, they may still have some coughing symptoms but are not infectious.
• If someone is not being treated with antibiotics, they need to stay away for three weeks from the start of cough.
People who have whooping cough and are infectious, should stay home, and especially stay away from childcare, school, or work, young children, pregnant women and away from people who live or work with babies or women in the last month of pregnancy.
A person who has been in contact with someone who has Whooping cough should watch for symptoms for the next three weeks and see their doctor if they develop symptoms.
