Just a quick one today. Practice will be on again, Friday 11 June starting at around 2.30 pm. It might be cool, it might be wet, it might be anything it wants to be, but we never let the weather define us at Orange Clay Target Club. Don't let the weather define you - come on out and have a round or three of practice - you know you need to get out of the house.

Okay, it's pretty damp at the moment but the rain will be easing tomorrow, Friday 5 June, for Orange Clay Target Club's practice. Even if it gets a bit precipitous, you can always enjoy the company of the resident wags and would-be comedians. As usual, we start somewhere between 2.30 pm and 3.00 pm.

Rumour on the street is that the s***ties will be having practice to get primed for the Sunday monthly s***t competition (weather forecast is sunny and a balmy 11 degrees - perfect conditions that only OCTC can provide). Come down and try your hand - it's not as hard as you think it is (and heaps more convivial as well).

Before our regular practice last Friday, Orange Clay Target Club members underwent refresher CPR training and the use of tourniquets with OCTC member and paramedic, Alan Hawke. The members were instructed on the latest approaches to CPR, and the use of the club's defibrillator - invaluable knowledge that we hope to never use.

The training was instituted by the club when we discovered/realised that our defibrillator (that we received many years ago as part of a rollout to sporting organisations), while still charged, needed replacement pads and that we really weren't that confident in using it (even though it will step you through what is needed).

Most clubs will have a similar defibrillator to ours - maybe it's worth checking to make sure your defibrillator is usable and that your club members are familiar with how it works.

The May bonus monthly DTL shoot at Orange Clay Target Club provided a taste of winter from shooters across the NSWCTA Central Zone (Bathurst, Cowra, Condobolin, Orange and Parkes) and Western Zone (Narromine and Warren), all no doubt, in search of the Mixed Targets sash that brings delight and joy to any household (and especially those hard-done-by Western Zone shooters who have to head to neighbouring zones to even sniff a Zone sash).

The first event, a warm-up 25-target Point Score cash divide, saw only one 75/75 recorded (well done John Gray). The cash went to John Gray (first) and Doug Ferguson (Warren) and Ned Shelton (equal second in AA Grade), while first in A Grade went to David McMillan (Warren) with second split between Garry Paddison (Parkes) and infrequent OCTC member, Andrew McPaul (it's lucky he only turns up on the second full moon of every month as he'd severely towel the rest of us up if he had a real dip). B Grade was split three ways between Sam McRae, Rod Haug (Cowra) and Brett Dean (Parkes). Leo Micari just pipped Luke Tapscott to win C Grade.

The main event, the CZ 40-target Mixed Targets Championship had two possibles (60/60) recorded by Shannon Barby (Condobolin) and Jordon Little - just one each though. After the shoot-off, Jordon nabbed the sash while Shannon settled for the consolation first place in AA Grade.

It's worth mentioning that Jordon has, over the last few months, made the Central Zone DTL Open team, the Central Zone S***t team and finished in the top 15 NSW shooters at the State S***t Carnival. Well done and please take it easy on the mere mortals in future.

Second place in AA Grade went to Blake Osborne (Condobolin). A Grade was won by Andrew McPaul (see previous comment) from David McMillan, while Brett Dean and Rod Haug bobbed up again to take the placings in B Grade. C Grade was won by Tony McPaul from John Tomlinson (Parkes).

The third and final event (25 pair Double Rise cash divide) had Mark Dutton (Narromine) pip Adam Brown in AA Grade, while Shannon Barby streeted the field with 48/50 to claim first in A Grade from Darryl Weal. B Grade went to Blake Osborne from Andrew McPaul and C Grade to the up-and-coming Luke Tapscott from Sam McRae.

High Gun for the day was won by Shannon Barby (180/185) - a highly impressive result given the nature of the program and the four seasons encountered on the day (and notwithstanding that he may not like the cold weather).

Practice is on again tomorrow (May 29) at Orange Clay Target Club. Usually starts at 3.00 pm or earlier but may be delayed slightly (say 3.30 pm) as we will be having a refresher course on the use of the club's defibrillator and general CPR knowledge. The refresher course will be starting at 2.00 pm for those interested. As usual, practice will finish at dusk.
With the month having 5 Sundays, we will be shooting DTL again this week (see earlier post) including the Central Zone Mixed Targets Championship. You know you'll need to get a bit of practice in if you want to wear the adorable maroon and gray CZ sash on Sunday night when you surprise your significant other. All the other boofheads will be having a few sneaky practice shots so you'd be a mug if you didn't as well.

Not too bad a day weather-wise for the Orange Clay Target Club's May monthly shoot, with 30 shooters in attendance and visitors from Cowra, Narromine, Parkes, Warren, Sydney and Western Sydney making the trip to the cooler climates to take on the mountain men and women on their home patch. Just the one event this month but well worth the admission price - a 120-target medley (30T DB, 30T SB, 30T PS and 15 Pair DR).

After the dust had settled, Ned Shelton and Lucas Young (Western Sydney) both posted the highest score of 174/180. Word on the street was that the shoot-off ebbed and flowed but eventually the tide came in for Lucas (207/215), winning the event and the High Gun sash for the day - a great result for a great supporter of OCTC. Ned took the consolation AA Grade prize from Darryl Weal, who only just dipped out on a spot in the shoot-off. A Grade was shared between Joe Caltabiano and David McMillan (Warren) - both shooters scoring 164/180. B Grade was won by up-and-coming Junior Ben Delaney from the more experienced Sam McRae and Rod Haug (Cowra), who shared second place. C Grade went to Amanda Delaney winning a tight family contest from Tony McPaul.

The generosity of the clay target shooting community can never be under-estimated, and Sunday once again proved no exception, with prizemonies (and additional contributions) being donated to Dan Power and Becka Power to help them and their daughter Monica along the road to a successful recovery and rehabilitation. Orange Clay Target Club was humbled by the gesture of its members and visitors and matched these very generous donations. The link below forwards you to a GoFundMe page for Monica and her parents if you also would like to support the Power family.

A couple of big weeks coming up for DTL shooters at Orange Clay Target Club. This Sunday (24 May) we have the 120-target medley (the mixed grill of events) while the following Sunday has the Central Zone Mixed Targets championship as part of the program.
With so many competition targets on offer, you’d be a mug not to head out to practice tomorrow (Friday 22 May). As usual, we start around 3.00 pm and finish when you do. Oh, we cater for s***ties too.
