It is with a heavy heart today that we pay tribute to one of the greatest Lions to take the field in Wayne “T***s” Fulton who passed on Wednesday this week after a very long and incredibly courageous battle. T***s is now finally resting and at peace.
T***s made his debut at the club in 1965 / 66 season the 42nd 1st X1 player, more than 60 years ago. By the end of his incredible career played entirely at the Lions he remains the club games record holder today. He also is our clubs highest ever wicket taker with 581 wickets, testament to his skill, competitiveness and commitment to the Lions. 241 of those wickets were taken in the 1st X1 in a eighteen-year 1st X1 career with a best return of 7-72 against Geelong West to sit alongside of his hat trick taken in 1970 against Chanel College. Maybe one of his proudest achievements was his club leading 64 ducks, (a record in the GCA still to this day), suffice to say he was a damn good fast bowler who didn’t put a lot of time into his batting. At his peak, his bowling was so good that he was a seven-time bowling award champion in four different grades across his career including four times in the 1st X1. T***s incredible career also included a 1st X1 and 2nd X1 premiership, another flag in 1997 in the fifths, as well as an under 13 coaching premiership with Alan Gliddon.
Along with his beautiful wife Lyndell and his family, his paint brush and his friends, the Lions meant everything to T***s. He would spend many years working hard on the committee, in the bar, around the club, sponsoring and dedicating time to help at social functions. When his 1st X1 playing days ended, he took on the role as president for two years in 1983, as well as holding various committee roles for many years after. T***s was a mentor to many young players, but was also a tough man who made them work incredibly hard to earn success. He was recognised as the 15th life member at the club for his tireless commitment in the late 1970s, and was also just the third player inducted in the Mac Mason Hall of Fame in 2016 recognising the elite players within the club’s history, sitting proudly alongside of his lifelong great mate Drakey.
Off the field, many club functions would be headlined by the clubs very own resident band, the famous “Hoos Brothers”, with T***s leading the way on rhythm guitar, while Superdraw would also hold many fun memories with great mate Drakey and their makeshift tap and bar. T***s loved his time away at the end of season “Lock up your grandmothers” golf trips which saw him attend 27 years until health made it too difficult, including organising it for sixteen years, that’s a lot of dollars donated to NSW pokies over more than a quarter of a century, but T***s loved that trip, being with his great mates celebrating another season on the field.
T***s will be remembered as a very loyal clubman at a club that meant everything to him, a wonderful friend to so many, and a wise counsel who drove players to embrace a strong club culture. With many large figures at the club before him, T***s picked up the baton and demanded players respected the club and their team mates at all times. Mates will say “T***s was always right” and when you disagreed, he would always snap back with “But why?”, but 90% of the time he was always right.
Our club is a jigsaw of personalities and families created over seventy-eight years of history and T***s was one of those massively important jigsaw pieces, a part of our fabric for nearly sixty-one years. We have had a tough run over the past few years losing some incredible Lions, but like those people, the stories and memories of T***s and his incredible commitment to our club will live on forever. While it’s a sad time with his passing, we remember fondly and sadly he confronted his challenges head on with dignity, and just like his playing days fought so hard until the end. With his passing we can all still take learnings from the fight and courage he showed.
It’s now time to hang up the baggy red and rest T***s.
