Running the Full or Half marathon this weekend at Geelong Running Festival? Get excited! Nerves are actually good when channeled properly. 🏃♂️
As well as your normal taper strategies; rest and recovery, and carb loading; as a run coach and marathoner myself, I also strongly encourage you to use the nervous energy from slightly less training and a bit more time, to productively feed into your positive mindset and nervous system!
- Surround yourself with positive energy! Listen to success stories, helpful podcasts but STAY AWAY from anecdotal horror stories from Janet next door who’s second cousin ran a marathon 6 years ago 😤
- Taper from social media, cut your screen time and get to bed early from tonight; chances are race day eve you’ll be a bit nervy so get ahead of the curve with the zzzs 🛌
- Create yourself or (adopt an existing) mantra to have on repeat. sounds silly but the mind believes what it is exposed to! My Sydney favourite was “Good, Happy, Strong.”
I wrote this in sharpie on my hand so that when my attention drifted to discomfort or tiredness it was a reminder to myself I am strong even when I dont feel it, I can choose to be Happy and the rest will all work out Good. But make it something that hits for YOU. It could be your WHY or an inspirational person, or a reference point to another tough time in your life you have moved through.
And finally- visualisation! A hugely underrated tactic! Imagine not only the amazing finish line feeling, that first sip of an ice cold beverage and hug from your babies, but also visualizing you overcoming obstacles on the day calmly!!!!! A lot can be said for this- envision you how you handle unplanned set backs confidently as diverting to plan B doesn’t have to derail your race!
GOOD LUCK! I’ll be cheering for you! If this helped share with a running friend for their mental taper or tag them below x
