17 isn't too late to train. But it might be too late to develop.

There's a difference.

Development is a long-term process rooted in sensitive periods — windows where the body is primed to adapt to specific stimuli.

Speed.
Coordination.
These windows don't wait for convenience.

By 17, most of those windows have narrowed significantly. What you're left with is a young adult who has to work twice as hard to build what could have been laid down effortlessly at 9, 11, or 13.

Long-term athlete development isn't a philosophy. It's biology.

Majority of the time athletes don't get tired from a lack of fitness, they get tired from poor movement technique which forces them to expend more energy.

The knee-jerk reaction is to run 5km every morning to improve their tank.

While you may see some initial improvement, it eventually will have diminishing returns because sport is played at high speed and if your tehnique can't hold up under those intensities then you will always look unfit.

Athleticism is your ability to move.

It's a combination of:

speed
power
coordination
movement quality
resilience
rhythm

That's why the most athletic athletes aren't always the fittest.

The goal is to move well, produce force, absorb force, and stay efficient under pressure.

Acceleration comes down to:

how much force you can produce
how quickly you can produce it
how well you direct it into the ground

Strong athletes who can apply force well accelerate fastest.

Muscles produce force. Tendons transfer it.

If the tendon can't handle the load:

force leaks
performance drops
injury risk rises

Strong tendons help athletes:

sprint faster
jump higher
change direction more efficiently
tolerate higher training loads

Athletic development isn't just about building stronger muscles.

It's about building a stronger system.

Speed is about quality not volume.

Repeating the same poor movement pattern just reinforces that same poor movement pattern.
