The Just Being Co. I am now teaching in Hoppers Crossing and Altona locations - offering reformer and mat pilates, yin yoga, barre and private sessions.

I experience so many studios that are offering very contemporary styles of reformer Pilates - and I’m totally here for it, as part of my own practice.

But I am also someone who has practiced Pilates and trained my body for years. I have a sense of body awareness and how the movement should feel in my body.

Many people do not.

This is where teaching fundamentals and somewhat adaptively is really important. Our goal as teachers should be to guide our students with easy to follow cues and remember that what we are offering is a methodology.

I don’t believe that it should be easy and i do teach to challenge. But I also want to make sure that students are learning and feel safe in their practice.

I will draw from my experience with my own body and working with countless other bodies over my career. It gives me a keener eye to offer adjustments and modifications.

I am@currently teaching reformer Pilates in Altona on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings, plus I have some private sessions available in hoppers crossing.

Slowing down isn’t weakness.

Read that again.

Women in particular are not supposed to operate in a constant masculine state.

The constant need to be achieving, busy, ambitious. It’s not aligned with the true essence of the feminine.

We forget who we really are and wonder why we are sick, depleted, exhausted, in chronic pain.

The fix isn’t in a pill or at regular specialist appointments.

No.

It comes from a quiet place nestled deeply inside ourselves.

You can reconnect with this place when you stop with intention. To face the fragmented parts of yourself and gracefully piece them together again.

Most people don’t know this, but I still teach strength and conditioning. It’s a core part of my own training and it can be an integral part of yours too. As women, we need to include weight bearing activities as we get older, to build muscle and fortify our bones for menopause and beyond.

Having a strong body, also means a connection with it. We can learn to be more intuitive and understand ourselves in an embodied way. It’s never too late to start.

Today I had my first experience with a passive aggressive Pilates teacher… and it was wild! I promise I will never treat a student in my class like that. Almost ten years ago, I organised an event we called “real men do yoga” and the response was really positive. We saw quite a few men attend the class who were otherwise fit and athletic, who agreed that yoga was both physically challenging and great for mental health.

I think this principle can be applied to Pilates also. These practices open up a new element of what it means to be strong and to inspire a deeper sense of self awareness. And along the way, build community.

Ten years ago I stuffed my shoulder up pretty badly. I hated not being able to exercise or even move without pain. Which was kind of a blessing, in hindsight. It pushed me to go out and learn new techniques, that allowed me to work around the injury. That’s when I found Barre. It’s a great low impact workout, that almost anyone can do. Don’t take my word for it though, try it for yourself!

After three pregnancies, my body has changed. Finding reformer Pilates was a game changer for me. It helped rebuild the fundamentals and has made me stronger than ever. I know this, because I’m lifting heavier weights than before pregnancy. I’d definitely recommend pilates for any post partum mums out there.

After my hiatus from Melbourne, I was reminded of the hectic, heavy energy that seems to devour this city. Everyone is so busy, being busy, that we forget that slowing down and breathing can be important to our overall health.
