DRAFT EMAIL
Dear Member of the Legislative Council
I am writing as a Tasmanian resident to express my support for greyhound racing in our state.
The industry provides direct and indirect employment through trainers, kennel staff, veterinarians, track and transport workers, and administrative roles, while also sustaining many small businesses such as feed suppliers, hospitality venues, and local service providers, particularly in regional and rural areas.
Beyond its economic contribution, greyhound racing plays an important role in rural events and community life, providing social connection, volunteering opportunities, and continuity for traditions that have been part of Australiaโs rural fabric for generations. As many long standing regional industries and events disappear, the loss of greyhound racing would further erode an Australian way of life that values community, participation, and local identity.
While animal welfare must always remain a priority, greyhound racing operates within a regulated sporting framework, and any shortcomings should be addressed through stronger standards, oversight, and enforcement rather than an outright ban, which would have significant and lasting impacts on workers, volunteers, and regional communities.
I respectfully ask that this perspective be considered in decisions about the future of greyhound racing in Tasmania.
Yours sincerely
