Just to be sure I have everything for the job and packed in well. No air pockets, squeaks and loose straps .

Hunting of any kind carries inherent risks, particularly when you’re operating in steep, remote or unforgiving terrain. In many ways, that’s part of what makes the experience so rewarding. Even when you don’t take an animal, overcoming environmental challenges and pushing your own boundaries can leave you with a genuine sense of achievement.

That said, sometimes things don’t go to plan.

A slip on scree, a fall in snow or ice, a rolled ankle miles from the nearest track, or a more serious injury can quickly turn an enjoyable hunt into an emergency. That’s why having a plan is just as important as having good gear.

For me, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is one of those non-negotiable pieces of equipment when hunting remote country. It sits quietly in your kit and hopefully never gets used, but when things go sideways, it can become the most important item you’re carrying.

The team at TwinNeedle have developed a purpose-built PLB pouch that mounts securely to a bino harness, keeping your beacon protected, accessible and exactly where it needs to be. It’s a robust piece of kit from a great crew who proudly manufacture their gear in-house at the rear of their showroom in New Zealand.

Good preparation doesn’t remove risk from hunting, but it does help ensure you come home to hunt another day.

First look at the Swagman’s Provider.

The first knife in the Swagman series, the Swagman’s Companion, was released over two years ago and has proven to be a solid performer and consistent seller. Designed with bushcraft tasks in mind, it features a straighter spine, reduced finger guard and a shorter blade profile. The Companion was inspired by our good mate, adventurer and philosopher The Silly Swagman — well worth following for Australian bush adventures and thoughtful conversations from the track. The Silly Swagman

The new Swagman’s Provider takes the concept in a slightly different direction. It features increased blade length, a slightly wider profile, more drop point, a larger finger guard and will likely use two handle retention bolts rather than three.

Steel choice will be the highly regarded MagnaCut, paired with a sabre grind rather than the full high-flat grind found on the Companion. The result is a knife aimed at those wanting a little more capability in a larger, hard-use package while still retaining the practical field-focused design philosophy of the Swagman series.

The Swagman’s Provider is expected to be available in around four weeks.

Until then, happy hunting.

Another Small Sambar Stag that I caught out having a feed …. As long as the wind is in your face and you have some sort of screen to operate behind ( ie bush ) then you can get away with a heap of stuff. When I was doing a fair bit of filming ( Sambar ) in the very early years with Tony Gillahan I learnt you can get away with a fair bit of stuff with cameras etc providing you had the basics of Sambar hunting locked away. Back then we were filming us chasing Sambar with bows so you had to get your kit squared away , camera squared and loads of patience.
I also believe ( right or wrong ) that if you are relaxed and enjoying the moment the deer seem to be more relaxed. Maybe the intensity of a prey animal staring at them with intent gets them all jittery but it your happy and relaxed it seems to work for me ….. 60 % of the time , it works ever time hehehe .
