The Netball Victoria Association Championships are heading to Bairnsdale this Sunday 15 June - and it’s all thanks to the incredible redevelopment of our netball facilities at the WORLD Sporting Precinct 💪

With 45 teams, 500 players and around 800 people expected from across the region, it’s going to be a huge day for Bairnsdale Netball Association as host. Games run from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, with strong local representation and a great community vibe.

Events like this bring real benefits to our region - from talent pathways for young players, coaches and umpires, to a welcome boost for local cafes, shops and accommodation 🛍️🍔🛏️

Council created this venue so our community could attract and support major events like this - and it’s paying off 💙

Participation in sport is booming in our region so I want to ensure that everyone benefits, including female players and officials.

Therefore, I am making it a priority to support the proposed upgrade for the Inverloch-Kongwak Football Netball Club, which would ensure female participants have the appropriate facilities to be able to play sport.

I met with club leaders to view the existing ageing facilities and the new concept drawings. The new building would include modern player facilities and an upstairs function room which would help fill the gap that the local community needs.

🏀 Advocating for Indoor Sports Facilities with Sarah Race – Federal Labor Candidate for Flinders

We had a productive meeting today with Sarah Race, Federal Labor Candidate for Flinders, to discuss the urgent need for improved indoor sports facilities on the Southern Peninsula.

Sarah’s passion for supporting local communities aligns with SPBA's vision and highlights the challenges we face through the lack of sporting infrastructure in the Southern Peninsula

During the meeting, we shared:

🏀 The urgent need for improved infrastructure to support all sports, including basketball.

🏀 Opportunities for cost-effective solutions and co-funding to make these projects a reality.

🏀 The broader community benefits of accessible, multi-use facilities that enhance health, wellbeing, and local economies.

We appreciate Sarah’s commitment to advocating for affordable and family-friendly initiatives that benefit the Peninsula, and we look forward to her continued support of this vital project.

“We can’t build stadiums quick enough to satisfy all levels of the sport and it’s only going to get more challenging,” Andrew Gaze says.

“We see it at all different levels and we’re seeing it at the higher level where junior rep teams or NBL1 teams are struggling to find practice courts.

“Because the game is so popular from a participants standpoint, during the evenings, in the mornings, on the weekends, there’s very little court availability.”

To begin a special multi-part report, we investigated how many basketball courts Australia lacks relative to demand, how many people are turned away from playing as a result, and what it would cost to fix.

The numbers are astonishing.
