Gippsland lakes species reports
March 2023
King George Whiting
It’s been a great season for whiting once again in gippy lakes
Plenty of fish being caught from 38-42cm with fish 45cm not uncommon
Early in the season due the amount of fresh water coming down the system the whiting were mainly being caught around the sea grass beds of rigby , Fraser and Flanagan island (north and south channels)
Now the flow has settled the fish have spread through the system from metung west
Right through to Lochsport including
Raymond Island , The long spit and Carstairs bank and s***m whale head!!
The whiting can be very picky without good tidal flow and for that reason it’s always recommended to move you bait very slowly to enhance a strike!
Both paternoster and running sinker rigs work (I use both depend on where I’m fishing)
Size 4-6 long shank baits holders are the preferred hook but a lot of people are using gamagatsu shiners with good success!!
Don’t be scared to fish in shallow water and always look for geography like drop off , Sandy points and w**d meets sand edges!!
The jury is still out on the best bait
But if they are on most baits will work
Including
Mussel, squid, peeled prawn, shrimp ,cured sandworm and live shrimp!!
And yes you will come across a range of other species in these areas using theses types of baits and rigs including flathead, salmon, trevally, tailor and bream!!
Tight lines
