KCC hosted the third annual Central Victorian Club Challenge today. Six clubs from Northern Districts and Goldfields Regions competed in a round robin handicap GC doubles event. It was a very tight finish - going into the last round Maldon, Golden Square and Quarry Hill were all on three wins and only seperated by two nett hoops. Castlemaine, Kyneton and Bendigo all had a chance to ruin the day for another team. Castlemaine and Kyneton did exactly that to Maldon and Golden Square respectively - both with come from behind 7/6 wins. This meant Quarry Hill’s pair of Trevor Ware and Colin Scott claimed the title. It was some sweet revenge for Quarry Hill, who lost the Autumn Pennant final at KCC three days ago in a tiebreaker playoff to a combined Maldon/Golden Square team.
We look forward to Bendigo Club hosting next year’s Club Challenge on newly laid courts.

Kyneton Croquet Club member Damien Hadfield joined Quarry Hill players Lois Kirk, Bruce Shaw and Barry Lovell to represent Northern District Croquet Association at this year’s Association Croquet Country Regionals, held in Ballarat. The Regionals have been held since 1964 in three sections, with a fourth section (then known as ‘Junior A Grade’) added in 1972. Damien was the winner of this section (now known as Section 2) and was the only undefeated player to compete in the 3-day Country Regionals event. He is the third player from Kyneton to win this title (aptly named the ‘Ballarat Cup’) after past winners Ross Oliver in 1973 and Madge Eaton in 1982.
Association Croquet is the traditional and more technical version of croquet, but has not been played competitively in Kyneton in the last few decades as the popularity of Golf Croquet has taken over. Golf Croquet was developed in the 1980’s, and is a faster paced game that is easier to learn.
The Ballarat Cup will be returning to Kyneton after 44 years, just in time for the club’s 150th birthday celebrations later this year. Kyneton is the oldest croquet club still playing in Australia. While Golf Croquet is now the main game in town, Damien is making sure that the club’s roots in Association Croquet are not lost.
