Five horses with connections to the Kyabram Trotting Club ran amongst the minor placings in two states over the past week. We go back to the Kilmore fixture last Thursday night, where the Graham Lyon part owned and trained 'Heavenly Flyer' contested the second of the night. Driver 'James Herbertson' let the three year old come out under its own steam and was able to settle four pegs, from the back row draw. Running seventh and locked on the fence at the bell, 'Herbie' found himself shuffled to the rear of the field half way down the back for the last time. Able to ease into the running line as they passed the 400mts, 'Heavenly Flyer' came three wide around the bend, and was able to run home very strongly to grab second on the line to be beaten by 8.9mts in a MR of 2.02.2
At Menangle in Sydney on Saturday night, the 'Luke Bryant' owned 'Franco Novelist' went around in the first of the night. Trainer ' 'David Thorn' elected to take a concession claim with his driver, and engaged 'Vaughan Duncan' to do the steering. Running the gate at the start, 'Duncan' was able to be three back on the pegs as they settled, with the two horses vying for the top running the first split in a fast 25.4sec. Easing into the one one as they worked down the back, 'Duncan' and then moving up to challenge for the lead as they turned the bend, 'Franco Novelist' ran to the front up the straight, only to be run down in the shadows of the post to finish second beaten 1.8mts in a sizzling MR of 1.49.7. This horse is low flying and will win a big one soon.
We then go to the Shepparton meeting on Tuesday night, where trainer 'Lisa Hardy' had 'Abercrombie Limbo' engaged in the second race of the night. Driver 'Nathan Jack' used the horse's early speed from gate two, and ran to the lead, before easing to take a sit on the leaders back. Running third and two pegs at the bell, 'Jack' was content to wait until they turned for home to run at the leader, but was unable to run him down before a swooper came from the rear to run past them both. 'Abercrombie Limbo' held on for third place and was beaten by 4mts in a MR of 1.58.3
In race five of the night, the 'Gary Pekin' trained and driven 'Cresco Threepeat' started from gate five off the arm. With 'Cresco Threepeat' showing no early speed, 'Peko' restrained to the rear as the field found its order. Running last of the nine horse field at the bell, 'Peko' eased three wide with 900mts left to travel. Getting a three wide tow up from the eventual winner from the 600mts, 'Cresco Threepeat' was able to run into second place around the bend, and held off the rest of the field to be second for the third week in a row at Shepparton, beaten 5.2mts in a MR of 1.58.4.
In the seventh race of the night, 'Montana Muscle' owned by 'Rocket Crilly' and trainer 'Ken Covington' started from outside of the arm over the short trip. Driver 'Gary Pekin' eased the mare at the start, and was running near the rear of the field as they settled. Running seventh of the eight runners at the bell, and three back in the running line, 'Peko' waited until the 400mts mark to ease three wide to try to make a run at the leaders. Being pushed four wide around the bend, 'Montana Muscle' ran home strongly late to finish third beaten 4.1mts in a MR of 2.02.6

There was four horses with connections to the Kyabram Trotting Club that ran amongst the placings in two states over the past week. We go to the Wagga meeting conducted last Friday afternoon, where the 'Peter Hall' part owned 'Wicked Wizard' started in the fifth race on the card. Starting from gate six off the arm, driver 'Abby Sanderson' restrained the horse after the start, and had 'Wicked Wizard' running second last as the field took its order. Running eighth in the field of nine at the bell, 'Abby' eased three wide as the field reached the 500mt mark and quickly sprinted before going four wide around the bend and ran to the lead turning for home. Coming away from his rivals in the run home, 'Wicked Wizard' was eased down to score by 8.3mts in a MR of 1.53.5.
Also at Wagga was the 'Mark Watson' trained 'Flojos Best' who started from gate three in the sixth of the day. Driver 'Taylah Osmond' was keen to look for the front at dispatch, but with a line of three all looking for the top, 'Taylah' eased 'Flojos Best' to settle three back on the pegs s they took their order. Running third at the bell with the field of eight in single file, and the leader having the pace right on, 'Taylah' eased into the running line at the 400mts to make her run, and ran into second place round the bend and held it in the run home to be beaten 5.5mts in a fast MR of 1.52.1.
Back in Victoria on Monday afternoon at Terang, the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Kamaran' contested race five on the card, the standing start trot. Being ODS, driver 'Kerryn Manning' had 'Kamaran' at the top of the track on the 20mt strand. Stepping safely at the start, 'Kerryn' allowed 'Kamaran' to balance up and settled down running eighth in the nine horse field. 'Kerryn' waited until they got the bell, before easing three wide to work forward to try and get a forward position. Posted three wide for the remainder of the trip, 'Kamaran' gave a lovely tow up three wide to the co favourite. Hitting the front as they turned for home, the horse on his back eased out and sprinted up to take the lead late with 'Kamaran' 3mts behind to finish second in a MR of 2.05.8 from the 20mts.
At Shepparton on Tuesday night, the 'Gary Pekin' trained and driven 'Cresco Threepeat' started from gate six in the first of the night. 'Peko' was able to ease in to the running line as the field took its order and was three back in the running line in seventh place as they settled. No sooner had the field settled when 'Peko' eased 'Cresco Threepeat' three wide and worked forward to find the breeze as they got the bell. 'Cresco Threepeat' sat at the wheel of the leader until they turned for home, when the leader just got away from him, but he was able to hold on to second place for the second week in a row. The margin was 7.4mts in a MR of 1.57.1.
Kilmore kicks off the local racing tonight, and then we have to wait until Shepparton race on Tuesday night. Bendigo race in their usual slot on the Wednesday night.
Echuca has qualifying trials scheduled for this Sunday at 10am. Nominations close with HRV at noon Friday. Good luck to all for the coming week

14/05/2026

It was a much quieter week this week for the members of the Kyabram Trotting Club with only two horses running amongst the minor placings, in comparision to the previous week. We go back to the Charlton meeting last Friday afternoon, where the 'Peter Hall' part owned 'Wicked Wizard' contested the third race of the day. Driven by 'Ryan Sanderson' for his father and trainer 'Shane Sanderson', 'Wicked Wizard' started from gate six of the arm over the 2100mt trip. Restrained by 'Ryan' as the arms folded. 'Wicked Wizard' came across the back of the field to lob into the running line and was running one one as the field took their order. Running fourth as they heard the bell and with no change to the order, 'Ryan' was able to stay in the one one down the back, before easing three wide at the 400mt. Quickly working up to second around the bend, 'Wicked Wizard' was still giving the leader about two metres as they straightened, and ran to the leader as they neared the post, but just couldn't run him down, to be beaten by a short half head in a MR of 1.57.4. It was another tough effort from the ever consistant performer.
At the Maryborough meeting on Monday afternoon, the 'Paul Fidge' owned and trained 'Jindalea Jack' contested the sixth race of the day, the concession drivers pace over 2190mts. Driven by 'Joey Sharp' and starting from gate two, 'Jindalea Jack' was asked to run the gate and crossed the pole marker to run to the top after they had gone 100mts. Entering the back straight, 'Sharp' eased the pace in front, but no sooner had he done so and the eventual winner came three wide from the tail of the field, and had to much momentum for 'Jindalea Jack' and was able to cross him to take up the lead. Once in front, he eased the pace, and 'Jindalea Jack' was behind the leader at the bell, and was keen to go quicker. The pace was still slow into the last lap, until at the 500mts the leader quickened and put a gap on the field which left the back markers unable to work into the race. 'Sharp' gave chase and was a clear second as they turned for home, with the horse coming off his back running to the sprint lane, and they both gave chase to the leader. They made up ground in the run home, but the leader had to much of a break and 'Jindalea Jack' was nabbed right on the post to finish third beaten 1.7mts in a MR of 2.02.6.
Local racing this week doesn't kick off until Shepparton race on Tuesday night, and Bendigo go Wednesday.
Kyabram has qualifying trials this Sunday, and hopefully we get enough noms to run the fixture, and the weather is kind to us. Good luck to all for the coming week.

07/05/2026

It was a huge week for the Kyabram Trotting club members with eight horses running amongst the placings with six of them winning in two states and over two codes of racing. We go back to the Ballarat meeting last Thursday night, where the 'Luke Bryant' owned and trained 'Lower West Side' started favourite after drawing the pole in race two of the night. Driven by one of the drivers of the future, 'Taylor Youl', 'Lower West Side' was able to use his draw to advantage, and led without being chased off the arm. Once in front, 'Taylor' was able to back the tempo off coming down for the bell, before increasing the speed for the last half. 'Lower West Side' was able to peel off a 57.9 last half and went on to score comfortably by 2.4mts in a MR of 1.58.4.
In race four of the night, the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Kamaran' started from inside the second row for driver 'Kerryn Manning'. With a couple of horses drawn to her outside making mistakes at the start, 'Kerryn' was able to get off the pegs, and settled down three back in the running line as the field took its order. Running eighth and four back at the bell, 'Kerryn' eased three wide at the 700, and let 'Kamaran' slide forward to make a line of three at the 500, before running to the lead around the bend, and came away to score by 11.4mts in a MR of 2.00.7.
At Albury on Friday afternoon, trainer 'Mark Watson' had a degree of confidence in his runner in the fifth of the day,'Flojos Best'. Driver 'Taylor Osmond' was able to use the mares early speed to cross to the top from gate four at the start. Once in front, 'Taylor' let the mare run at a controlled speed to be going just fast enough to stop the back markers coming into the race. Leading at the bell, 'Flojos Best' was joined at the 400 by the death seat horse, before 'Taylor' asked her for her effort, and 'Flojos Best' quickly put paid to the rest and ran home untouched to score by 5.3mts in a MR of 1.57.2.
At Menangle on Saturday night, the 'Luke Bryant' owned 'Franco Novelist' contested the first on the card. Having a stint in Sydney under the care of 'David Thorn', driver 'Will Rixon' was able to use the pole draw to lob on the back of the leader as the field found its order. Following the leader for the remainder of the race, 'Rixon' lost the back of the leader around the bend when it kicked, but was able to get a break on the rest of the field, and 'Franco Novelist' was able to finish second for the second week in a row, to be beaten 11.8mts in a very slick MR of 1.48.9. 'Franco Novelist' has his hoof firmly on the till, at the moment.
On Sunday we change codes to the Wangaratta gallops, where the 'Tony Chibnall' trained 'Harford' contested the first of the day. Part owned by Leviathan Kyabramite 'John Croxford, along with fellow KTC committee man and our bar manager, 'John Dunne', 'Harford was asked to carry 59.5kg and jump from gate eight over the 1000mt trip. Jockey 'Mitch Aitken' was able to get 'Harford' to jump well and quickly ran to the lead as the field settled. Still in front turning for home, 'Harford' dug in deep and held off all the challengers up the straight to score by 0.06 lengths in a time of 58.27 seconds. It was the horses second race start and he is showing promise of more wins in the future.
We go to the Shepparton meeting on Tuesday night this week, where the 'Mick Blackmore' trained 'Dusty Philtra' started favourite in the fifth of the night. Bred and owned by long time sponsors and supporters of our club, the 'Wade' family, 'Dusty Philtra' started from outside the front row, with the states leading driver 'James Herbertson' doing the steering. Restrained out of the gate, 'Herbie' was able to ease the horse to settle three back in the running line as the field found their order. Running sixth at the bell, 'Herbie' eased the horse three wide with 500mts left to travel, and quickly ran up to the two leaders. Hitting the front rounding the bend, 'Dusty Philtra' got a break on the second horse, who wanted to hang out in the run home, but 'Dusty Philtra' was able to hang on to score by half a neck in a MR of 1.56.7.
Also on Tuesday night, but at the Terang meeting, the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Kamaran' backed up from his win on Thursday to contest the seventh on the card. Trainer 'Peter Manning' elected to use claiming driver 'Ada Massa' to drive the horse, after he become ineligible due to his win after the fields were drawn rather than scratch the horse. Drawing gate three off the gate, 'Ada' allowed the horse to balance up after the start, before working up to the death as the field took its order. 'Kamaran' raced in the death, until at the 400, a horse worked up to make a line of three, and 'Kamaran' couldn't sprint with the other two, and dropped back into third place, and held that spot til the finish to hold on to third beaten 18.5mts in a very slick MR of 2.00.4.
On Wednesday night at Bendigo, 'Kamarans' big sister 'Montana Muscle' went around in the third race. Owned by trainer 'Ken Covington' and 'Rocket Crilly', Montana Muscle' was aiming for back to back wins at Lords raceway. Driver 'Mark Pitt' had to bide his time after the start from gate nine row, and had 'Montana Muscle' three back on the running line as the field settled. Running sixth at the bell, 'Pitty' eased three wide at the 800mts when the back markers were commencing their runs, and was outside the leading pair at the 400 before breaking away around the bend and went on to score by 2.08mts in a MR of 1.59.3. It was the mares third win in her last six starts , and between the siblings, their have won seven races in the past eight weeks.

Good luck to all in the coming week.

23/04/2026

Kyabram Trotting Club members had a much better week with four horses amongst the money, across two codes and two states. We go back to last Wednesday where the 'John Croxford' part owned 'Midlife Crisis' went around in the sixth race at the Balaklava gallops in South Australia. Weighted to carry 61.5kg, trainer' Kristen Mooney' elected to use the three kilo claim of young apprentice 'Isaac Sit' to ease the burden. Jumping from gate two, 'Midlife Crisis' was slow to jump and was one of the last out, before 'Isaac' pushed through along the rails to grab the lead after going 200mts. Well rated in front, 'Midlife Crisis' turned for home with a break of one length, and was able to hold the break all the way up the straight and went on to score by 1.36lengths on the line.
We then go to the Bendigo harness on Wednesday night this week, where the 'Mark Watson' trained 'Flojos Best' contested the first of the night. Driven by 'Jack Laugher' on the night, 'Flojos Best' started from gate 10 off the second line. Restrained from the start to get a spot closer to the fence, 'Laugher' found himself four back in the running line as the field took its order. Running eighth at the bell, and with a slow first half, 'Laugher' had to ease out at the 800 as the back markers were starting to make their runs out wide. Running fourth at the 400, 'Flojos Best' ran to third around the last bend, and went on to hold third place on the line beaten 11.1mts in a MR of 1.58.0.
In the fifth race of the night, the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Montana Muscle' started from gate five in the Mares Trot over the short trip. 'Driver 'Mark Pitt' allowed the mare to come out at her pace and was able to lob in the one one as the field took shape. Shortly after, a back marker worked forward to be parked at the bell, and 'Pitty' found himself three back in the running line as they past the 800. Content to wait until they passed the 400, 'Pitty' eased 'Montana Muscle' three wide where she quickly ran up to the leaders, and grabbed the lead nearing the post and went on to score by 1.6mts in a MR of 1.59.5
In the next race of the night, the 'Neil Caldwell' owned, trained and driven 'Saint Eyes' started off the pole due to the scratching of the pole marker in the race. Running the gate as the starter let them go, 'Fabio' had 'Saint Eyes' on the leaders back as the field found its order. Not long after, the leader handed up to the death horse and 'Fabio' found himself three pegs. Running fifth at the bell, 'Fabio' seemed to have no where to go and nearing the 450, the one one horse started to tire, and 'Fabio' was able to ease off the pegs. Running up on the leaders backs as the worked the bend, 'Saint Eyes' then came three wide as they hit the straight, and ran past them in the shadows of the post to score by 3mts in a MR of 2.01.7.
Local racing kicks off at Charlton on Sunday, Shepparton race on Tuesday night, and Bendigo go on Wednesday night. Echuca has qualifying trials scheduled for this Sunday the 26th at 10am. Nominations close with HRV at noon on Friday.
Good luck to all in the coming week.

16/04/2026

Three horses with connections to the Kyabram Trotting Club finished amongst the prize money over the past week. We kicked off at the Monday afternoon fixture at Hamilton, where the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Kamaran' started favourite in the standing start trot on the card. Shooting for three wins in a row, driver 'Kerryn Manning' got him away from the twenty meter tape, before he swung into a pace, and had to be restrained. He had lost the best part of one hundred meters on the leaders, before he began to trot fluently. With a mile left to travel, he was tailed off hopelessly but chasing hard. They covered their last mile in 2.01.3, and at the finish, he had chased down most of the field to finish in third place beaten 21.3mts in a MR of 2.03.2 from the stand.
We then go to the Shepparton meeting on the Tuesday night where the 'Luke Bryant' owned and trained 'Lower West Side' began from gate six off the arm. Driver 'Taylor Youl' was able to spear across from its wide alley to take the lead as the field found their order. Once in front, 'Taylor' was able to control the speed from the front, and went at a comfortable pace early. Still leading at the bell, 'Taylor' increased the tempo of the race from the 800mts and had a three metre break on the field turning for home. The horse that was following 'Lower West Side' throughout the race went to the sprint lane upon turning for home and sprinted through to defeat 'Lower West Side' who held on to second by 7.3mts in a MR of 1.57.5.
We then go to the Melton meeting on Wednesday night, where the 'Mick Blackmore' trained 'Dusty Philtra' contested the ninth race of the night. Bred and owned by long time sponsors and supporters of our club the 'Wade' family, 'Dusty Philtra' was having his first start back from a spell. Driven by the states leading driver 'James Herbertson', 'Dusty Philtra' was restrained at the start from his wide gate, and settled at the rear of the field as they found their order. The pace of the race was slow early, and 'Herbie' let him stride forward under a good grip as they came down to get the bell, and was parked as they got one lap to go. The speed didn't go on until they reached the 400mts where 'Herbie' urged him forward and he kicked clear as the turned for home, and 'Dusty Philtra' went on to score by 6.5mts in a MR of 2.02.0. He will derive plenty of benefit from the first up run, so watch for him next start.
Local racing kicks off at Kilmore tonight where a few Ky horses are contesting. Bendigo has the Metro meeting this week on Saturday night, and Maryborough race Monday. Albury and Shepparton race Tuesday night before Bendigo go again on Wednesday night.
Kyabram has qualifying trials scheduled for this Sunday at 10am, so hopefully we can get enough noms to stage the fixture. Come down and see us on Sunday if you are free, where you can get a cooked breakfast and a cuppa, and enjoy some good grass roots harness racing. Good luck to all in the coming week.

10/04/2026

It was a bit better this past week for horses connected to the Kyabram Trotting Club with two horses winning their respectives races for our members. We go back to the Good Friday meeting at Stawell, where the 'Rocket Crilly' and 'Ken Covington' owned 'Kamaran' contested the only trot race on the card. Starting from the ten metre tap at the standing start, driver 'Kerryn Manning' got "Kamaran' safely when the starter said go. Running fifth in the one one with two laps to travel, 'Kez' was happy to let the horses from the rear that were working forward three wide go, as they were working to the lead, and she was still in the one one position. Running fifth at the bell, 'Kez' waited until the 500mt mark before easing three wide and running past the leaders around the bend, and kicked away and was eased down on the line to score by 3.7mts in a MR of 2.05.7.
At the Easter Sunday meeting at Echuca, the 'Wade' family owned and bred 'Pearl of Philtra' was on debut in the seventh race on the card. Trained by 'Susan Hunter' and driven by the states leading driver 'James Herbertson', the daughter of 'Ride High' started from outside the front row in gate six over the sprint trip. Restrained out of the gate as the arms folded, 'Herbie' was trappped out on a limb being four wide around the first corner, and the working three wide forward until he found the spot outside the leader after 700mts travelled. Sitting in the death as the field came down for the bell, 'Herbie' allowed 'Pearl of Philtra' to put its head in front turning into the back for the last time, and ran to the top with 400mts to go. 'Pearl of Philtra' turned for home with a three metre break, and was able to hold of the challenge from the second horse in the run home to score a tough win by a head in the MR of 1.58.5.
Local racing kicks off today with the Maryborough meeting this afternoon. We then wait until Shepparton race on Tuesday night to complete a quiet week locally. The big Mildura Cup carnival comes to its climax on Saturday night with the running of their Pacing Cup. Good luck to all members in the coming week.

03/04/2026

It was a disappointing week for the Kyabram Trotting club, with no horses finishing amongst the placings over the past week, albeit with very few starters. There are plenty of runners engaged in the coming week, so we hope for a bit more luck this coming week. There are starters at Stawell, Wagga, Echuca and Bendigo, so we wish them all luck.
We have trials on this Sunday at 10am with one small trial, so come down and have something to eat, a cuppa or drink, and have some early fun for the day.

26/03/2026

It was another good week for the Kyabram Trotting Club members with four horses running into the money over the past week. We go back to Monday night at Ararat where 'Kamaran' contested the second race on the card. Owned by 'Rocket Crilly' and former trainer ,'Ken Covington', 'Kamaran' is now trained by 'Peter Manning' at Great Western. Having his first ever start from the stand, driver 'Kerryn Manning' got the horse away safely from the 10mt tape, and had him running fourth as the field took order over the long 2570mt trip. As the field entered the back straight for the first time, 'Kez' came away from the pegs and worked up to be outside the leader with two laps to go. Eye balling the leader as they got the bell, 'Kez' allowed 'Kamaran' to work past the leader at the 600mt mark before he cleared right out from the field, to be leading by 20mts as they turned for home, and went on to win by 33.5mts easing down on the line in a MR of 2.06.9.
We go to Shepparton on Tuesday night where the 'Lisa Hardy' part owned and trained 'Maurlen Grace' went around in the third race of the night. Driven by 'Lisa's' son 'George Chamouras', 'Maurlen Grace' started from the outside of the second row after being put out of the draw at its last outing. Restrained to the rear as the arms folded back, 'George' stayed in the running line, and only had two runners behind him as they came down to get the bell. Still rearward as the field entered the back straight for the last time, 'Maurlen Grace' found herself last of the eleven runners as the back markers commenced their runs out wide. Hooking three wide at the 400mts before being the widest runner around the bend, 'Marlen Grace' ran home well to grab third over the line beaten 10.1mts in a MR of 1.56.4
In the fourth race on the card, the 'Peter Hall' part owned 'Wicked Wizard' started out wide on the gate in barrier six. Driver 'Ryan Sanderson' restrained the horse early, and was caught three wide early, before he was able to drop into the one one with 1700mts left to travel. Running fourth at the bell, and still comfortable in the one one, 'Ryan' was able to stay in the running line until they turned for home and then made his three wide run to hit the lead half way up the straight and scored by half a head in the MR of 1.58.6. 'Wicked Wizard' has been the model of consistency this preparation and is worth following in the coming outings.
In race five of the night, the 'Ken Covington' part owned and trained 'Montana Muscle' contested the junior drivers race over the sprint trip. Part owned by 'Rocket Crilly' as well, 'Montana Muscle' is a half sister to 'Kamaran who won the night before. Driven on the night by 'Lauren White', 'Montana Muscle' started from gate four of the arm. As the arms folded, there was a line of four, before they dropped into single file on the bench, with 'Lauren' able to be three back . With no change to the order at the bell, the first three pinched a break on the others as they turned into the back straight for the last time, with the back three chasing hard to tack on at the 400, where 'Montana Muscle' eased three wide, and ran into second place and tried hard but couldn't catch the leader to hold on to second beaten 8.1mts in a MR of 2.00.0

It was a very quite week for members of the Kyabram Trotting Club with only one horse associated with the club finishing in the placings. We go back to the cup meeting at Charlton on Sunday afternoon, where the 'Shane Sanderson' trained 'Wicked Wizard' contested the fifth race of the day. Owned by a group of Kyabram locals, including past trainer, 'Peter Hall', 'Wicked Wizard' had to start from the outside of the second row. Driver 'Ryan Sanderson' restrained the horse out of the gate to find a position in the running line, albeit near the tail of the field. After a very quick lead time, 'Ryan' elected to work three wide with 1400mts to go, and was able to lob in the death as they heard the bell. With 900mts left to go, 'Ryan' was able to angle in behind the leader, when the trailing horse lost the back of the leader. With the leader running very fast sectionals, 'Wicked Wizard' was starting to feel the effects of the three wide move, but was a clear second as they past the 400. The leader kicked away turning for home, and 'Wicked Wizard' was able to hold on for third place on the line, in a race where they ran 0.2sec outside of the track record. 'Wicked Wizard' was beaten 22.8mts in a MR of 1.54.7.
Local racing doesn't kick off until Shepparton race on Tuesday night, before Bendigo race Wednesday night.
Kyabram didn't get enough nominations to run our trials fixture last Sunday, so our next trials day is the 5th of March.
Good luck to all for the coming week
