Biography
Following last year’s fascinating and highly entertaining talk, St George Chess Club is proud to invite back GM Surya Ganguly for another engaging lecture (titled: "The world’s leading chess players – their personalities, and how this impacts their games").
Surya Ganguly was born in Bengali, India on the 24th February 1983; and he is an Indian Chess Grandmaster and chess prodigy from Kolkata. He started playing chess at the age of five, and he has achieved great successes at National Junior and World Junior Championships since the age of 8. He also set a record as being the youngest player to beat a grandmaster at age 11.
Surya became an IM at 16, and a GM at 19. He has won a host of national and international tournaments, including the Indian National Championship for a record six consecutive times from 2003-2008, and the Asian Championship in 2009. He was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2005 by the Government of India for his outstanding sports achievements. He also received the "Shera Bangali" award in 2009 as the best Sportsperson in Bengal, and the "Khel Samman" award in 2013 from the Government of West Bengal. He was also part of the team of seconds that assisted Viswanathan Anand in winning the World Title matches against Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov and Boris Gelfand in 2008, 2010 and 2012 respectively.
