Melbourne's famous St Kilda Beach and marina are almost unrecognisable today, with the water turning into a smelly black sludge as a result of nearby dredging works.

Authorities have warned dredging can result in discoloured water and sand with high microbial levels, urging residents and visitors to avoid contact with the water until the week-long operation is complete.
