KIAMA CAVALIERS | 1856–2026

The Kiama Cavaliers Cricket Club was saddened this week with the news of the passing of one of its finest former players in Colin Dodd.

After a successful 1st Grade career in Sydney with the Sutherland District Cricket Club, Colin settled in Kiama, and was approached to become the captain coach of the Kiama Cricket Club, a role he performed from 1982 to 1985, and again in 1986/87 and 1992/93.

In his second season in charge, with the help of veterans in Ron Hall, Neil Sweeney and Ross Simmons alongside youngsters in John Watts, Ben Coady and Col Wright, Dodd led Kiama to its tenth SCDCA 1st Grade premiership, defeating Jamberoo by 101 runs.

The following season as defending premiers they made the final again, but falling to Albion Park. These have been Kiama's last 1st Grade premiership and final appearance.

After a season off Dodd returned to in 1986/87 to lead Kiama to the 1st Grade minor premiership, before losing in the semi-final to Shellharbour.

As captain of Kiama 1st Grade, Dodd had 36 victories from 62 matches, the third most in the club history. A diminutive yet powerful batter, he scored 2468 runs at an average of 36.29, with one century and 16 half centuries. He also took 66 wickets with his left arm orthodox spin at an average of 15.61 and 32 catches.

His contributions to the Kiama Cricket Club were enormous. He came at a time of change, and led from the front, producing a premiership and several finals appearances.

The clubs condolences lie with his family at this time, as we remember one of finest players that the club has been fortunate enough to see.

VALE PETER DAVID LAUGHTON | 1977–2026

The Kiama Cavaliers are deeply saddened by the passing of long-time club member, player, coach, administrator and friend Peter Laughton.

Peter first joined the Cavaliers in 2000, beginning an association with the club that would span more than two decades and leave a lasting contribution both on and off the field.

Peter played 30 senior matches for the Cavaliers, predominantly across Second and Third Grade, and was always willing to pull on the blue and gold when his club needed him.

His first season proved his standout with the ball, taking an outstanding 43 wickets at an average of just 13.33. Among his best performances was a devastating spell of 4/15 against Warilla, helping dismiss the opposition for just 38.

While his bowling statistics may have dominated, Peter could contribute with the bat too. One memorable moment came in 2002 when he shared a 67-run partnership with a young Mitch Gowland, providing valuable support as Mitch went on to compile a remarkable 205 not out.

Peter's contribution to the Cavaliers extended well beyond his own playing days.

He began coaching junior cricket in 2011, helping foster and develop a generation of young Cavaliers including his own three boys, Isaac, Matt and Jacob.

That journey produced a particularly special moment in February 2018, during Peter's final season coaching juniors, when he had the opportunity to share the field with all three of his sons, a wonderful family cricket memory that was captured at the time by the Illawarra Mercury.

Peter was also an enormously valued contributor behind the scenes. He served on the Kiama Cavaliers Board from 2012 until 2024, including five years as Club Treasurer from 2019, giving countless hours of his time to help administer, strengthen and shape the club.

In 2024, Peter's years of dedication were fittingly recognised when he received the prestigious Outstanding Service to Kiama Cricket Award. It was recognition of a contribution that went far beyond runs, wickets or positions held.

Across more than two decades he was a player, junior coach, father on the boundary, Board member, Treasurer, volunteer and friend. Like so many of the people who make community sporting clubs special, Peter simply kept giving his time whenever it was needed.

The thoughts and heartfelt condolences of the entire Cavaliers community are with Ursula, Matt, Isaac and Jacob, and Peter's extended family and friends, at this incredibly difficult time.

As a mark of respect and gratitude for Peter's contribution, all Kiama Cavaliers teams will wear black armbands in Round 1 of the 2026/27 season.

It will be our opportunity, as one club, to remember a much-loved member of the Cavs family and acknowledge everything Peter gave to Kiama cricket.

Peter's life will be celebrated at the Kiama Pavilion on Tuesday, 22 September, with the memorial service commencing at 10.15am.
