Sat 30th we wrapped up an incredible day at Snooker SA with the 2024 State 6 Red Snooker Championship, and wow, what a tournament it was!

A fantastic field of 14 players gathered, 8 of them had already secured an invite for the Ian Chappell Invitational the following week and one last invite available to the winner! The competition was fierce right from the start, with a Round Robin stage where everyone faced off against each other in best-of-three matches. The top two from each group moved on to the Semis.

Group Stages Highlights:
Group 1: The matches were tight, and we saw some surprises! One of the favourites, Peter Udycz, fell short as Kieran McGuire and Paul Dickinson (fresh off his Minor State Title win) made it through to the Semis stage.
Group 2: Another competitive group with Frank Zhao (State 147 Winner) and Peter Darby (Multiple State Championships to his name) battling it out. But it was Col Conlan and John Quinlan who came out on top of this group, securing their spots in the Semis.

Semis:
We kicked things up a notch with the best-of-five Semis:
Paul Dickinson vs. John Quinlan: John showed his class, winning 3-1 in a tough match.
Col Conlan vs. Kieran McGuire: Col took the win 3-1, advancing to the final.

The Final Showdown:
What an epic final! The stage was set for a battle between two good mates, John Quinlan and Col Conlan, and it was intense from the first frame.

- John came out of the blocks strong, keeping Col scoreless until the colours but Col held his nerve winning the frame on the final black.
- Col used the same tactic in the second scoring just two points this time before the colours stage, but again snatching the frame on the final black.
- The third frame was a tighter battle and this time John was behind going into the colours and this time his turn to take it on the final colours.
- The fourth frame was tight, but Col held his nerve to push the score to 3-1.
- The tension kept rising as they split the next two frames, and Col managed to clinch the 6th to go 4-2 up. Which should have been the win, however, they both mistakenly thought it was a best-of-9, so they played on!
- John fought back to make it 4-3, but Col held his ground, taking frame 8 to win the match 5-3 and claim the 2024 State Red Snooker title!

The final was played in the most respectful and sportsmanlike manner, and honestly, it was a joy to referee. Both players were determined to win but also shared genuine respect for each other. A massive congratulations to Col Conlan for his victory!

2024 State Junior Championship Wrap Up

After a couple of years without Junior State Titles, we've been working closely with the Junior Cue Sports Association of SA INC to help get things back on track. As a result, we were able to run two exciting Junior Events this past Saturday—the U14 and U18 State Snooker Championships.

The U14 competition saw four entrants who played through a round-robin format, facing each other twice before the top two players met in the final. Krishna, who has been receiving coaching at Snooker SA Adelaide, showed his skill and experience, ultimately proving too strong for Kaden. A special mention goes to Kaden, who, despite having never played on a full-sized table before, made it to the final—a fantastic effort.

In the U18s, we had 8 participants, most of whom are on the State 8-Ball team. The U18s were split into two groups, with the top two from each advancing to the Semi-Finals. A special shout-out to Blake and his family, who made the long journey from Kangaroo Island to compete, despite not having a full-sized table on the Island for practice, Blake finished top of his group.

Blake and Sebastian’s semi-final match, though ending 2-0 in Sebastian's favor, was closely contested. Blake was incredibly unlucky not to take the second frame, with a near-miss on the last black, leaving Sebastian an easy shot to close it out.

The other Semi-Final saw Wessel and Harry split the first two frames, forcing a decider. Harry was looking likely to take a spot in the final but Wessel held his nerve and pulled off some key pressure pots to secure his place in the final.

The Grand Final was a thrilling contest. Sebastian got off to a strong start, taking the first frame. However, the nerves began to show as he neared the finish line, allowing Wessel to fight back. Wessel took the second frame, then outplayed Sebastian in the final frame to claim the 2024 U18 State Title.

A huge thank you to Chris Wignall and the Snooker SA volunteers for providing such a high-quality venue for the event. We also appreciate Chris Jeffries for driving the event and helping bring the players together. Many thanks to Dennis Wignall for officiating both finals.

We would like to express our gratitude to all the parents who supported their children by getting them there on time, assisting with refereeing, and helping out with the rules or anywhere else they could.

Lastly, a big thanks to all the players for their exemplary conduct throughout the day. There was no complaining, no negativity—just positive encouragement for each other and appreciation for the event. A notable moment was Wessel calling a 7 point foul on himself during the final, despite no one else noticing it. His honesty and integrity speak volumes about his character, respect for the game, and consideration for his opponent and the referee. Well done, Wessel a very worthy winner of the U18 State Snooker Championship.

Congrats to Paul Dickinson on winning this year's State Minor Snooker Championship. Commiserations to Alex Wong who can hold his head high after a great tournament.

In what was a hard fought contest after two days of comp the result was decided on the final black of the deciding frame.

Thanks to all that supported the event, and a bigger thanks to Chris and his team of volunteers for again providing an amazing room for us to play out of.

Hats to Rex Cole who walked in the door to watch the final, and next thing was roped into refereeing. We really appreciate the help.

We are well and truly into today's event, the 2024 Minor State Snooker Championship.

Round Robin's on at the moment. The Quarters will play out this afternoon before returning tomorrow for the semis and grand final.

After a big day at the venue Saturday, we are down to the last 4 players vying for this year's State Titles. All of them with a State Title to their names; Stacey Vine (x2 State Snooker) Peter Udcyz (3x State Snooker, 18x State Billiards) Peter Darby (2x State Snooker) and Frank Zhao (1x 147 State Snooker title). It should be a great conclusion to the event today.

Kicking off today @ 10am with the Semi-Finals in a best of 7 frame as follows:

Stacey Vine vs Peter Darby
Peter Udycz vs Frank Zhao

Followed after a short break then the Grand Final over 9 frames.

We are underway with the 2024 Snooker State Titles. A smaller field with some of the regulars being interstate or tied up with other commitments. Earlier this month we held the Minor Billiards State Titles, we had a keen 8 runners this year and split into two groups for the round robin stages. One group going the way of the bookies and arguably the results we expected. The other group was interesting with all players posting 1-1 in their first two matches. This meant that the winners of the last round progressed. Chris Sharpley overcame Peter Woods by 21 points and Rex Cole defeated Craig Hese in a close contest up until the dying minutes where Rex had a small break and ran out a 26 point winner.

The semis where then played out on the Sat after a small break with last year's winner Peter Darby up against first time semi-finalist and BSASA president Chris Sharpley. Chris put up a fight but wasn't enough and Peter came out on top in that match. The other match between teammates Dennis Wignall & Rex Cole was quite close up til the half-way point and then Rex got motoring and ran out a comfortable winner and taking him to the final on his very first attempt in the event.

The final was set to be a good one with both player showing greta from most of the tournament. The final was over 2 hours and Peter came out of the gates firing. Rex had moments of fight but everything he threw at Peter was thrown straight back and some, Peter was on top through the match and ran out winner 425-312 and clinching a second title in two years, not too shabby for a snooker player!

Thanks to Chris Wignall and the team for providing incredible conditions to play in. Thanks to Dennis for refereeing the Final and those that umpired the semis, very much appreciated.

Today we held the State 147 and Minor State 147 Championships. We had 14 entrants so we started off splitting up into two groups of 7. The top 4 from each group to then go through and play off for the State 147 Title. The remaining players would then fight it out for the Minor State 147 Title.

The Minor State 147 title was a close finish with only 23 points separating the top three after their 5 matches. Ali Jafari winning by only 5 points over Frankie So. Great to see first time entrant Abdul rounding out third spot.

The State 147 title was looking pretty open heading into the last round with Peter Udycz leading the way with a 29 point buffer over Frank Zhao in 2nd spot and 38 & 39 points over Peter Darby and Col Conlan respectively. Enter Cool Calm Cueing from Frank Zhao and a classy 76 break. Some very solid pots and nice canons to develop reds. He was very unlucky to have no angle at all on the last black making position on to the last red virtually impossible. No clearance or ton but scored more than enough to ensure victory overall.

Today we held the first Junior Event for the year, a come and try 147 Snooker. We had six talented juniors join us for the comp. It was a strong start by the nationals boys showing why they had the lower handicaps. But as the morning progressed and some fatigue set in the leaderboard changed significantly. The two junior girls both had exceptional last frames to fly up the leaderboard to finish in second and third position overall. Kialize in that last frame had a very nice 21 break, the highest of the day. But with some great potting all day and great composure throughout U12 Krishna took out the win.

A big thanks to Chris at Snooker SA Adelaide for hosting the event at the best snooker room around.

Thanks also to Chris & Kelvin from Junior Cue Sports of South Australia Inc for their amazing work on cultivating the talented kids and getting them involved.

Thanks to the parents who brought the kids out and stuck around to watch. Great to see.

We are looking forward to the next event already. Hopefully even more entrants. All this is building towards the Junior State Snooker Event later in the year.
