The concept of Iaido is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana (sword). Iaido is a non-contact martial art based on the traditional Japanese swordsmanship techniques through a series of kata - patterns of movements. The art e
mphasises on form, fluidity, and timing. Learning Iaido provides an opportunity for practitioners to immerse themselves in Japanese culture through a friendly, supportive environment with Australian values. Students are able to progress at their own pace, in a class with personal attention from the teacher, in a non-pressure manner. The initial course provides Beginners with the fundamentals of Iaido:
• Learn the basic etiquette and culture surrounding the Japanese katana (sword).
• Using the sword: how to hold it properly, perform basic cuts, and sheathing the sword.
• Introduction to All Japan Kendo Federation's standardised Seitei Iai Kata. The course fee is $100 for the first 4 weeks. Club equipment will be provided. Subsequent stages will focus on:
• Building and developing basic skills.
• Learning additional Kata.
