Coach Megs is feeling excited!!

OMW to Albury, New South Wales, Australia for my first ever ACJBC 2024 Assistant Coaching role for Basketball NSW. CANNOT WAIT to see what our wonderful U14W Ospreys team bring to the table this week. I'm exhausted, excited and nervous all at the same time, just like our players are, I'm sure. I'm looking forward to creating a whole new generation and location of basketball Warrior Women! Can't wait to learn more and become a better Coach too.

Watch out when I get back Kempsey Basketball Association, you are about to have a whole lot of new drills and plays to learn!

This is part of the reason I coach the way I do. There's always a reason to celebrate and take the time to understand each and every person who comes through my programs.

WHY RELATIONSHIPS MATTER

In our school district, we are working on teaching all of our staff skills and tools to build, sustain, and repair relationships. We share a collective goal in Wylie that every student will have a meaningful relationship with at least one adult. We believe in relationships so much that we give three relationship surveys to our students each year.

We ask the following three questions:

1 - Who is your favorite teacher and why?
2 - Do you have an adult you trust and can talk to on campus? If yes, who is it? If not, who would you want to be able to trust and talk to?
3 - Does my teacher care about me? What does he/she do to make me feel this way?

When teaching relationship-building skills to our staff, we often start with the reflection question:

Why are relationships important?

Kobe Bryant was known as a hard-driving leader. Each week I start with a Mamba Monday blog post. This week’s Mamba Monday fits right in with my school district’s mission of building meaningful relationships.

During an interview at USC, Kobe was asked, “What did you learn at the end of your career that you wish you knew at the beginning?”

He said:

Understanding empathy and compassion. As a young kid when I came in the league, it was like - I’m driving this way, and you were either on the train or the track. There was no such thing as understanding people had lives outside of the game. If I understood that at an early age, it would help me as a leader communicate better. I came to understand that later, and getting to know people on a personal level - their fears, insecurities, dreams, ambitions, and desires - can help them reach the best version of themselves.

SOMETHING(s) TO THINK ABOUT:

1 - Why are relationships important?
2 - How do you build relationships with the people you teach, lead, and serve?

2023 NSW COUNTRY UNDER 12’S SKILLS DAYS

Following the announcement earlier today that the John Davidson Country Jamboree will be held in Griffith and Port Macquarie in 2023, we are excited to share the details for the upcoming Under 12 Country Skills Days that serve as trials for the Jamboree.

The coaching program concentrates on individual skills that Under 12 players should be able to master before they graduate to the next age group and are open to any interested player.

Don’t miss out on your chance to register as these camps are hugely popular and sell out quickly.

I NEVER want to be a player's last Coach. I want to help them love the game and continue to thrive. Grassroots sports are key for helping children (and adults!) thrive.

I would challenge you to teach and coach discipline and respect without teaching and coaching the passion and joy out of your athletes.

We have a lot of kids who lose their love and joy for the ‘game’ because of us.

Try to not be a kid’s last coach.

This is why Lauren Elizabeth Jackson is THE G.O.AT, FULL STOP.

No other Baller inspires me like LJ does. Thank you LJ, keep being you and showing us all the way.

Lauren Jackson has been playing with a fractured foot since Round 5 of the WNBL season😲

She confirmed that she suffered the injury against the Perth Lynx, which now requires additional rehabilitation following each game 🏀🐐💪

The best thing you can do in the car on the way home from your child's game is say 'I loved watching you play today' then shut the hell up!

Actively listen to your child relate the highs and lows of the game, and keep repeating 'loved your effort, you were great, it was so much fun to cheer your team on'!

If you can't, check this website out for support and how to make sport fun again for your particular munchkin!

As adults, we sometimes forget that youth sports is all about the journey and the lessons our children learn and apply our own complex adult expectations on top. This pressure often leads to children quitting sport and missing out on all the good stuff active sports participation brings.

If you can't give them the positive reinforcement your children need after a game, here's some tools to learn how.
