From the discovery of copper that transformed a small settlement into a thriving town, to innovations that helped shape the future of farming around the world, Kapunda's story is one of ingenuity, resilience, and community spirit.
The Kapunda Copper Mine was Australia's first successful metal mine and pioneered many innovations, including the country's first Cornish Beam Engine, first open-cut metal mine, first copper smelter, and first acid leaching plant. These fascinating stories are brought to life in Bagot's Fortune, a special annex of the Kapunda Museum dedicated to the mining history that put Kapunda on the map.
But Kapunda's story doesn't end with mining. As the town grew, local engineering firms became leaders in innovation, developing early harvesting machinery that would influence agricultural technology for generations. Visitors can even see examples of these locally built machines on display at the Museum.
Kapunda also played a significant role in the story of Sir Sidney Kidman, Australia's famous "Cattle King", who managed his vast pastoral empire from the town and generously supported both the local community and Australia's First World War effort. These stories are explored in the Museum's Kapunda Remembers exhibition.
