Today, the great man himself - Sir David Attenborough - turns 100 years old. One of the most extraordinary human beings the world has ever known, and someone whose passion for wildlife has inspired generations across the globe.
Kangaroo Valley Adventure Company is incredibly honoured to have played a small part in his remarkable journey. Hosting the BBC team in 2001 and 2002 during the filming of The Life of Mammals (BBC, 2002) will always remain a special part of our history. For months, we worked alongside Sir David and the BBC crew as they explored the unique native wildlife of Kangaroo Valley.
At just 8 years old, I was lucky enough to shake Sir David’s hand, spend time with him, and witness the passion and sincerity with which he spoke about Australia’s native wildlife. His deep respect for the natural world, especially iconic species like the platypus, has absolutely shaped my own passion for the work we do today (although it hardly feels like work!) 😂
For Mike, guiding the BBC team to the best wildlife locations throughout Kangaroo Valley was a dream come true. The groundbreaking methods used to study our local platypus population and capture never-before-seen footage of these elusive animals was nothing short of incredible. To see Kangaroo Valley’s platypus featured through Sir David Attenborough and his phenomenal team’s storytelling helped showcase just how special this place truly is.
Even today, we still keep in touch with Sir David, which is something we will never take for granted.
Please join us in wishing him a very happy 100th birthday. 🎂👑
