We all know that brake pads wear, but what about rotors? 🤔
Yes! And probably faster than you might think…
✅Quite a few factors contribute to rotor wear: Pad material, riding conditions, riding style and bike/rider weight to mention just a few.
✅Metallic pads, crappy weather, gravity riding and heavy bikes (e-bikes or bikepacking) all increase wear on your long suffering brake rotors.
✅Generally speaking, the minimum thickness of a rotor before replacement is recommended is 1.5mm. That’s about 15 sheets of paper - not a lot, but rest assured they are designed to still be safe at this thickness. If you look on a ruler though, that’s pretty thin so it’s wise to replace as soon as they approach this figure 👍
✅Most riders tend to use the rear brake more, so that’s the one that usually gets to minimum first👍
✅Brake rotor thickness is checked as part of a standard service at ElevateMTB, but if you have a vernier at home it’s an easy check you can do yourself!👍
