The mystery of the Australian Alps! Researchers, until 2016, were puzzled by the origin of the Australian Alps. Most mountains are formed by collisions or eruptions - but Kosciuszko, as always, is special. It was only five years ago that scientists developed a satisfactory explanation for the formation of the Alps. Professor Müller and his team from the University of Sydney discovered that the gravity field around Kosciuszko was higher than expected. That suggested that the region might have been pushed up from below. He concluded that two separate events likely gave the Australian Alps the necessary push. 100 million years ago, the edge of our continental plate stopped being dragged down by the Pacific plate. Eastern Australia then ‘rebounded’, gaining 400-600 metres in height. 50 million years later, our continent started drifting north, and slid over the same mantle upwelling - the Pacific Superswell - that caused the formation of Tahiti. That lifted the Australian Alps an additional 700 metres. Most of the world’s mountains are formed by eruptions, collisions of tectonic plates or tearing of rift valleys.
