Message from the founder of the KYUP Project Mel 💪🏼👊🏼❤️

I have a very special request to support 20 year old Hayden Westwood and his 113km ultramarathon run for KYUP! Project. Hayden is running through the night across violence hotspots in memory of the 113 women killed since 2023.

I’m asking all my family and friends to donate, sponsor and spread the word about this remarkable effort.

Last night I had the honour and privilege of helping my beautiful friend Mel Thomas along with patron Layne Beachley AO at the Art Gala 2023. The purpose of this night was to raise money and awareness for the KYUP Project and help break the cycle of family/intimate partner violence at the grass roots.

The latest information I have is that the night raised $150k a figure which will help deliver the program in regional areas and areas of high need.

Thank you to Alena, Justine, Penny and Katelyn who were a pleasure to run around with taking donations, organising raffle tickets and basically encouraging attendees to donate.

I had an amazing experience volunteering my time to support, breaking a board on stage for the first time since surgery and meeting the incredible Layne and Kirk. See the photographic evidence below!

Almost 9 months post surgery and I have reached a new post injury PB today. 7kg bicep curls…….. nudging closer to my goal of 10kg my pre injury weight!

I’ve come a long way from not even being able to pick up my toothbrush to curling 7kg! Now just need to fix my injured calf! 💪🏼👊🏼⚽️ ☯️

Almost 7 months on from surgery and the improvements slow down. Not only that, I have felt like I had been hit with the worst Lupus flare I’ve had since diagnosis along with finding out I’m low in iron. Rehab comes with set backs, however, it also comes with wins.

6kg Bicep Curls today……… each day edging towards my goal of 10kg curls, my pre injury standard. Feeling pretty good today. Rehab continues 💪🏼👊🏼❤️

22 weeks since my distal biceps tendon repair. It’s always good to see how far you’ve come. As of today I am bicep curling 5kg with my right arm which is such a good feeling. Still on the up 💪🏼 My juggling has been a challenge to say the least. I’m still aiming to make that first 50……… new PB on Monday of 18.

Started back light training at Hapkido and 7 sleeps until I am back on the pitch at Summer Soccer. No goal keeping this season though 💪🏼👊🏼⚽️

17 weeks post op and it’s starting to look like I have a bicep. Clearance to do bench press yesterday (20kg Olympic Bar), DB Press (8kg) and O/H Press (4kg) to add to my current exercises. Far from being back to my strongest, however, some sense of normality is returning to my training.

Injuries whilst frustrating give you a choice to either stay down and feel sorry for yourself or thank the surgeon by working your butt off and returning to pre Injury levels. Me being me plans to go beyond and improve myself.

For anyone interested I’m still peaking at 15 juggles with the ball, however, with a fraction more control ⚽️

Can’t wait to get back to the gym again 💪🏼👊🏼

One of the first questions I was asked following my surgery was “are you giving up now?” My face would have been priceless!

I don’t believe giving up is in my vocabulary and I even had my return to Hapkido and football planned out prior to my surgery. Thankfully, the physio agreed with my plan.

My goal is to come back a better martial artist and football player than before. More planned, stronger, fitter and an increased skill level.

One skill I have never been shown how to do is juggle the football. Well that’s one of my goals.

If you need some light entertainment watch the videos……….. my goal is 50 by my return game on the 1st February 2023!
