Really great to see the work the Somerset & Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association are doing with their Logs for Cod project.
They’ve been placing hollow hardwood logs into local waterways to create nesting and spawning habitat for the endangered Mary River Cod. Historically our rivers would have been full of fallen timber and woody debris, which provided important shelter and breeding sites for native fish.
Over the years a lot of that habitat has disappeared as vegetation along riverbanks has been cleared.
Projects like this help bring some of that structure back into the system and give native fish a better chance to thrive.
It’s fantastic to see local volunteers, fisheries groups, and government programs working together to support the recovery of one of South East Queensland’s most iconic native fish species.
Efforts like this don’t just help cod — they improve the entire river ecosystem. 👏🐟
