Roger’s Spring Night Comp Report
On the evening of Wednesday, 10/12/25, with the fire pit burning and the early summer sun dropping behind the trees of Thompson‘s Reserve, Inverloch Tennis Club wrapped up another successful year with the grand-final of its spring night doubles competition.
John Richardson's Team 6 had ridden a late charge all the wayto the final night of the season, pulling off a string of close victories over quality opposition. They now faced Aaron Coyles Team 11 who had survived a nail-biting quarter final two weeks before, ably supported by Mitch Oliver in the number four role.
In the first sets (played to eight games) the consistency of Team 11’s Martin Stone and Fraser Oliver was too strong for the Team 6 combination of Kristy Loenen and Noah Humphrey, who on the night fell to an 8-1 loss that didn't reflect their recent form. While on the adjacent court John Richardson and Sebastian Toomey jumped Team 6 out to a strong lead over Aaron Coyle and Patrick McGrath, only to see their opponents claw their way back to a one game lead late in the set. But then Richardson and Toomey took control of the final games to run out to an 8-6 victory.
In the second sets McGrath and Oliver established an early lead before Toomey and Humphrey got back on serve, putting the whole thing in the balance as Richardson and Loenen led Coyle and Stone 4-1 on the other court. But McGrath and Oliver stepped up to take a commanding lead before Oliver flawlessly served out what proved to be the championship game, winning the set 8-3 to establish an unbeatable lead despite Richardson and Loenen eventually taking out the adjacent set 8-5.
So Team 11 (Coyle, McGrath and Stone with Mitch and Fraser Oliver filling the shared number four spot) went home with the coveted coffee mugs, while Team 6 contented themselves with the chocolates.
