Just a Reminder. šŸ˜‰
The Turnip.
Gravel Grinder + Alleycat-Style Ride.

An ā€œalleycatā€ is an unsanctioned, informal, underground bike race that traditionally takes place in cities and urban areas where participants race from one checkpoint to the next in an effort to complete all challenges and/or hit as many locations as possiible.

The Mary Valley Alley Cat mashup bridges the chaotic, subculture roots of urban bike messenger racing with the scenic, community-focused world of unsealed adventure riding. Organized by Alleycats CC in the Imbil/Gympie region of Queensland, this format subverts traditional cycling events by prioritising self-reliance, exploration, and camaraderie over pure speed.

Not a Race: Unlike its urban ancestors, the focus is entirely on completion, community, and "Type 2 fun" (activities that are challenging in the moment but rewarding afterward).

There are no podiums.

Unsanctioned & Informal:
No formal race infrastructure, road closures, or timing chips.
Inclusive Autonomy: Any rider capable of handling remote dirt roads is welcome. Participants choose their own pace, stop to take photos, and collectively tackle the steep climbs and changing back-country conditions.
Any and all participants are welcome.
14 June. Imbil.
Course coming soon.
Just don't call it an event. šŸ˜„

So, why do turnips get such a bad rap? The phrase ā€œturnip eaterā€ was considered to be an insult, meaning not very smart. A ā€œturnip headā€ meant a country bumpkin, and ā€œjust fell off a turnip truckā€ meant a country bumpkin in the city. Turnips were considered to be food for the poor and illiterate.

Somewhere between a perfectly sensible weekend plan and a questionable life choice lies an AlleycatsCC gravel ride.

For those who remember the 2025 Furball Series—a collection of events that felt less like organized cycling and more like a polite ambush by hills, dust, and your own overconfidence—you’ll be pleased (or mildly alarmed) to know that Alleycats Cycle Club is back at it again.

The Turnip.
Just Turn Up & Ride.

The route, allegedly, has been carefully curated using a highly scientific process:
Find the nicest possible countryside.
Add gravel. Add more gravel.
Just when riders feel confident—insert a climb that feels like it was designed by someone holding a grudge.

Veterans of the 2025 Furball Series will recall the unique Alleycats charm:
Start lines filled with optimism and freshly cleaned bikes.
Mid-ride existential crises somewhere around kilometre 37.
Finish lines featuring dust-covered riders claiming, ā€œThat was actually fun,ā€ in the same tone people use after surviving mild natural disasters.

And let’s not forget the gravel itself. Not just any gravel—this is gravel with personality. The kind that:
Sounds like applause when you ride over it (but it’s mocking you).
Moves slightly when you least expect it.
Dust that finds its way into places on your bike—and body—you didn’t know existed.

Wave goodbye to your clean drivetrain.

Accept that a ā€œfun gravel rideā€ is a philosophical concept not grounded in any sort of reality & somewhat of a leap of faith.

Yet, despite all this—or perhaps because of it—there’s something undeniably magnetic about an Alleycats non-event.

It’s the shared suffering, the ridiculous stories shared over a finish line beer, and the quiet pride of completing something that looked much easier on paper.

So when the next ride rolls around, you’ll sign up. You’ll tell yourself you’re ready. You’ll check your tyres, your gears, your life choices.

And somewhere out in the Mary Valley, as the gravel crunches beneath your wheels and a climb looms suspiciously ahead, you’ll realise:

You wouldn’t have it any other way.
