The Huonville Lions are a community football club who have been established since 1998. The club was formed when neighbouring clubs, the Huonville Bulldogs and Franklin Lions amalgamated to form a stronger team in the Huon Football Association (HFA). Both former football teams had over 100 years of rich history, great club achievements and success on the field. The current day club, The Huonville Lions, are strong competitors in the Southern Football League (SFL), fielding four senior teams- Mens, Womens, Reserves & Colts (u/18). During the 21 years of operation the club has experienced premiership success in 2008 & 2019. The Colts & Senior Men took the flags in 2008 and the Reserves brought home the Grandfinal cup in 2019.
The club has transformed it’s culture over the last few years to represent our wider Huon Valley as a family friendly and community orientated organisation. We pride ourselves on giving back to the community members and businesses who continue to contribute time and money in support of our club . In 2019 club players & committee members were proud to assist our community by volunteering at numerous local events such as the Huon Valley Bush Fire relief appeal, The Taste of the Huon, Willie Smith’s Mid Winter Feast, The Huon Show & The Food Bank Christmas hamper appeal.
The 2019 on field success was also celebrated, with both the Men’s Senior and Reserves teams making Grand Final appearances. Our Seniors narrowly came away as Runners up, but the club can only highly praise the players for their entire efforts during the 2019 season. The Reserves boys had a season of hard work and determination which resulted in them winning the flag and bringing a premiership cup back to the club after a 10 year drought. 2019 was also the year that the club’s inaugural women’s team joined the competition. Guided by club legend Steven Reeve, the girls quickly adapted to the new game and proved to be fierce competitors by the end of the season. The Colts as always in country football, overcame adversity and continued to field an eager & hard working team. We look forward to their improvements in 2020!
As the 2020 season is near, the club is happy to announce that all coaching positions have been appointed! So with Tim “Billy” Lamprill at the helm of our Senior Men, assisted by Jack Philp, we are eager to see the team excel after last year’s mammoth effort. The Reserves are led by the effervescent Brad Cordwell, who is looking forward to working with the boys and retaining the enthusiasm that they ended the 2019 season with. The girls will again be coached by Steven “Runner” Reeve who is thrilled to have old and new faces returning to the track and already showing strong positive signs for 2020. The Colts will be under the wing of local lad, Jordan Phillips who is returning to the Lions Den. We believe Jordan is the perfect fit for our c**t boys and he can offer some great guidance for our future Senior players. The club is in a great position heading into the 2020 season, with new facilities coming our way. The current change rooms which were constructed over 50 years ago, will soon be demolished and a brand new fit out of home and away change rooms will be constructed in their place. Things are happening at the Lion’s Den and we hope you join us along for the ride to see what the year has in store for us! #hearthemroar
