The Dojo - JKA Adelaide South Australia

The Dojo - JKA Adelaide South Australia “The Pathway to excellence” for all ages, families, and fitness with purpose as we journey together.

JKA Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. A trained karateka is able to co-ordinate mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing the unleashing of tremendous physical power at will. Therefore, it is not the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka; rather, it is the ability to co-ordinate mind and body. Upon developing this ability, even the smallest per

son finds that they have, within themselves, the power to deliver a devastating blow to any would-be attacker.
“The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the
character of its participants.” ...Gichin Funakoshi founder Shotokan Karate. JKA Adelaide, also known as, Adelaide Academy of Karate Do Shotokan, joined back to the JKA in 2016. With Sensei David Rigby as head instructor and school director, established the school in 1984. He has been practising Karate since 1973, in his home, England. He has extensive experience as a member of the national team, assistant national Kata coach, as a national judge, and mentor to many students who have gone onto be members of the national team.

In today’s fast-paced world, the dojo is more than just a place to practice kata and kihon; it has become a vital 'third space' for our community—a sanctuary where we seek not only physical strength but mental clarity and resilience.

As we continue our journey together, I am heartened to see our members embracing the deeper Budo philosophy of Shotokan. In an era where technology and speed often dominate, our focus on technical precision and the standardization of our art keeps us grounded in a lineage that spans generations. Seeing you all pour your heart into every movement reminds me that the true pursuit of karate is the perfection of character.

Thank you for making our dojo a place of mutual growth and support. Let’s keep lifting each other up, one technique at a time. Oss.

Remembering Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda 🕊️

Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda was one of the four JKA instructors sent to Europe to teach Karate, alongside Sensei Kase, Sensei Kanazawa, and Sensei Shirai. Originally based in Liverpool, he went on to become one of the most influential and respected figures in British Shotokan Karate, leaving a lasting mark on generations of KUGB instructors and students.

For many, Sensei Enoeda embodied traditional Shotokan Karate. His Karate was exceptionally strong and his presence unforgettable. He had a big booming voice, a great smile, and a wonderful laugh, but in the dojo he was immensely demanding and expected complete commitment from those he taught. He was deeply respected, widely loved, and the standard he set still lives on in the clubs, instructors, and students who continue to follow his teaching.

Sensei Enoeda passed away on 29th March 2003. He was deeply loved, greatly respected, and is still very much missed. His legacy remains woven into the very fabric of KUGB Karate.
