It’s been a slow start with only 5 training runs - but we finally got out to our first race of the 2026 season at the 30th The Siberian Husky Club of NSW Shield Race. An awesome event with a massive entry, put on by an awesome club.
We “travelled light” this year, just Jo and Vaughan with 14 dogs + new “Bindi the Winhaven sled dog mascot🤣💜”. Jess stayed home due to studies.
Winhaven dogs raced across 5 classes with 4 mushers. Thanks to Mitchell Deahm and Ruby Offner for running teams for us in 3 dog and 2 dog classes. With only a short amount of prep training, we were happy the trails were shortened a bit this weekend.
After being off the scooter for nearly a decade and double knee replacements and early last year, Vaughan decided to run 2 and 1 dog open and 1 dog touring on the scooter. Fortunately there were no regrets and he reckons the scooter comeback will continue.
There was a bit of ‘marriage sheep stations rivalry’ with Jo and Vaughan entered 1 dog touring and Vaughan straight behind chasing Jo down for the win by 15 seconds. Although this only happened bc Jo had a big ‘off’ in a mud puddle just before the finish line. Luckily that’s were the race photographer was located - some good actions shots to follow💜🤣

1 Dog Touring - 1st and 3rd. Daisy (Vaughan) and Flash (Jo)
