Welcome to a new year of rankings!
2024 has kicked off well for the Tossers, with a World Athletics Javelin event in Hobart on Saturday. The event bought out the best with the Tossers, with Liam Shelton (61.74m), Caleb Kirkpatrick (47.94m) and Oliver Vince (43.15m) all throwing PB’s in the event. Hamish Peacock took the win with an impressive 73.72m. At the other end of the ground Shot Put was on, in the Open age group, Kaity Fassina throwing 13.40m to kick her year off, while Oliver Vince backed up his personal best in Jav with a PB in Shot, throwing 12.19m.
While this was going on in Hobart, the State Combined Event Championships was held in Launceston, where Xavie Davie was jumping up a weight to the 5kg Shot, and he barely missed a beat, throwing 12.11m, followed by a solid 47.38m in Jav.
Hammer is where the competition has really heated up in recent weeks, with Jackson Mellor now declaring himself a dual Discus/Hammer thrower and lighting up the circle. Jacko opened the year with a 54.23m bomb, but the challenge was answered, with the cannonball Caleb throwing a PB of 56.16m. These two giants are guaranteed to deliver some ripper results as we head to the pointy end of the season.
Our Master Tossers are busy preparing for the Nationals in Hobart at the end of March. Cathy McKeown has delivered some great results in Hammer (38.83m), Shot (10.86m) and Discus (30.31m) in the lead up to the Masters Championship events, which get underway with the State Throws Pentathlon Championships on the 11th February. And how good is it to see Michael Mullarvey back in action! Mullarvey missed the 2022-2023 season due to elbow surgery (the fate of the aging Javelin thrower), but he’s back in action this season and working hard on getting the tip of that 700g Jav to land 😊
For the Tossers this week, Interclub is on in Launceston Wednesday night, with Hammer & Shot on the program, while in Hobart there’s Javelin, Shot & Discus kicking off at 9am Saturday.
