That is the debate Tasmania should be having right now.

Because strong safety laws should be practical, measurable, and based on evidence — not rushed, vague, or impossible to implement on actual worksites.

Australia is being told not to panic.

We’re told there’s a four-step fuel security plan. We’re told the government has it under control. We’re told to trust the process.

But when you look past the headlines, the reality is a lot less reassuring.

Australia is already sitting at level two of the government’s fuel security framework, which means disruptions are already being taken seriously enough to activate the plan. And yet there is still confusion around what happens if things get worse, when rationing would actually begin, and which sectors would be protected first. Farmers are already warning that the plan still gives them no real clarity, despite the fact they help keep the country fed and moving. ()

That is the real issue.

A serious fuel security plan should not leave Australians guessing. It should not be vague about priorities. It should not rely on “trust us” messaging while households get smashed by prices and industries are left wondering whether they’ll be pushed to the back of the queue.

And the temporary fuel excise cut? It might ease pressure at the bowser for a moment, but it does not solve the deeper problem: Australia remains heavily exposed to international fuel shocks and supply chain pressure. ()

Another rate rise. Another hit to everyday Australians.

The RBA lifted the cash rate to 4.10% on March 17, and the major banks quickly passed on the full 0.25% increase to variable mortgage holders. Economists have also flagged that May could still bring another hike if inflation stays hot.

So while they call it “just a quarter of a percent,” families already struggling with groceries, fuel, insurance and power bills know exactly what it really means: less breathing room, more stress, and one more reminder that the cost of living crisis is far from over.

The big question is not whether rates moved. It is whether ordinary Australians are being forced to carry too much of the burden.

Qantas is adding more flights to Europe, but do not expect cheaper fares.

As conflict in the Middle East disrupts major stopover hubs like Dubai and Doha, Qantas is increasing capacity on key Europe routes from mid-April to late July. Perth to Rome will go daily, Paris will rise from three to five flights a week via Sydney and Singapore, and Perth to Singapore will increase to 10 flights a week.

That sounds like good news, but the reality is tougher: capacity between Australia and Europe has been squeezed, routes are being reshaped around safety concerns, and aviation experts say this is unlikely to bring down prices. Travellers may get more options, but not cheaper ones.

One conflict, and the whole travel market shifts. More delays. More expensive tickets. More uncertainty for ordinary travellers.

Trump has called out Australia publicly, and if this escalates, ordinary Australians will wear the cost.

Higher fuel. Higher living costs. More pressure on families already doing it tough.

Australians do not want to be dragged into another conflict to please the US. They want strong leadership, national interest first, and a government with the backbone to protect this country.
