Tasmania has had a pretty good run with Combined Eventers in recent years. When Matt Hosie started out we were often the only Tasmanians contesting the events. But he did win 4 national and 2 Oceania titles before becoming a full time pole vaulter.
But recently things have changed. Jane Hickey and Jessica Bray were very competative in national events, as was Fergus Fletcher. Olivia Jones and Darcy Noonan both collected medals in 2020 in searing Brisbane heat. Post covid, Abbey Berlese collected silver in 2022, before heading a stunning 1-2-3 at the Australian Little athletics u15 championships with Issy Wing and Charli Ross filling the podium. Blake Doyle finished 4th in the boys event, meaning Tasmania won the combined events national trophy at that meet. In 2023, Issy Wing broke through for her first national title, and broke the u17 and u18 state records at Northern multis in November. Alex Wojcik claimed the National u18 Decathlon title, Avery Thomas was close up in the u17 event, and Bailey Van Den Broek made it back to back wins for the girls at ALAC u15 championships. Sianna Adkins announced herself as an athlete to watch with her 4398 points and state record on debut in the state u16 championships.
Already in 2023/24, the state U15, u17 and u18 female state records have fallen (Sianna and Issy Wing), Charli Ross has won silver at the Queensland and Victorian championships, and a massive 13 athletes have qualified for National Championships.
Yes, the Combined eventers are making a big satatement!
