Evergreen Boats is at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival all weekend.
Come down and check out our prototype flax and cork ‘timber’ dinghy.
There has been a lot of interest in the materials and process so far and it’s great to see people embracing new and sustainable alternatives.

My dad drew these great little artist’s impressions of the 2 rig options for the Gig.
The lug (single sail) is for people that want an super simple and fun experience and aren’t so worried about upwind performance.
The topsail gaff sloop will be more of a performance ’mini ship’ that will also be fairly simple and easy to sail but with better looks and performance.

After weeks of sanding and fairing she’s looking the part!
Just needs a coat of shiny white paint and she’ll come up nicely.

The hull is getting very close to completion but I realised I haven’t been updating progress.
It’s nice to see how it comes together but much more time consuming than I expected!

My brother and I jury rigging the original Gig as kids.
She was a great little boat for children but incredibly heavy and very awkward for an adult to row, let alone a couple of adults.
Apparently at one point we had Mum, Dad and all five kids in her with the smallest ripple washing over the gunwale. The story also goes that a small fish jumped into the boat but I was too young to remember that!
The new and improved gig would have coped admirably though perhaps still be a little crowed!

Introducing the ‘Gig’.
Named after the small dinghy I grew up with but significantly improved!
3.2m (10’ 6”) with impressive stability and load carrying ability while maintaining classic lines.
The Gig will come with oars and an optional lug rig and will have the option of putting a small outboard on the back if needed.

My brother Ben (with a little direction from me) has been slowly forming the 12ft sailing/rowing hull shape.
The idea is that the 12ft mold can be used to produce a range of sizes between 9 and 12ft.
The tricky part at the moment is making sure the shorter lengths perform as expected and it doesn’t just look like a boat with the stern cut off!
