Season Eve – Victorian Duck Season
Tomorrow morning thousands of Victorian hunters will be up well before daylight, heading out to wetlands across the state for the opening of the 2026 season.
There’s always something special about the night before!
Reports suggest good numbers of birds moving across many regions, conditions in several areas will be challenging, but the population is strong (you just need to find them!).
As always, Field & Game Australia members set the standard in the field. Please remember the basics:
• Pick up after yourself – leave wetlands cleaner than you found them
• Collect all spent shells
• Do everything you can to reduce wounding – and retrieve every bird you shoot
• Be respectful to other hunters and wetland users
There have been reports of possible blue-green algae blooms in some wetlands. If water appears discoloured, has surface scum, or smells unusual, use good judgement — particularly if entering the water or working dogs.
Unfortunately, anti-hunting activists may still appear on some wetlands.
Despite clear science and government support for regulated, sustainable hunting, a small number of ideological campaigners continue to seek attention.
If you encounter activists:
• Avoid confrontation
• Record interactions on your phone where possible (state the time and location in the recording)
• Report incidents to the Game Management Authority Victoria on 136 186 or here https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/enforcement/report-illegal-hunting-online
Most importantly, take a moment tomorrow to appreciate where you are. The sound of wings over water at first light is one of Victoria’s great outdoor experiences.
Good luck, hunt safely, and enjoy the opening.
