Viewer discretion is advised for the end of this video. Some images will definitely disturb a lot of people, and I apologise in advance.
The story of the s***m whale found in the national park is a complex one… Decisions made by authorities to do what they did to remove it dumbfound me. I take my hat off to the guys who were instructed to complete the removal. They did what they could with what they had… But geez, it could’ve been handled a whole different way.
The decision to drag it across the basin of the whole Coal Coast, in my eyes, was a very irresponsible one. Every boardrider club in the area had to cancel all weekend activities due to the huge increase in shark activity, which has been widely documented.
There’s been a lot of speculation that it should have been dragged out to sea and left for nature to take its course, which I personally believe would have been the best decision, but there might be reasons I’m unaware of as to why that didn’t happen.
I love the ocean, and this post isn’t meant to offend anyone. It’s purely just showing what I came across on the day and maybe start a conversation on safety matters of the community.
I cut the video short in the end because I couldn’t continue filming and watching what they were going to do with the rest of the carcass. And that’s when the sharks came out to play late into the afternoon…
Documenting moments like this isn’t easy, but it feels necessary.
