Dean Amos wins Cottons Creations 2026 Queensland Hillclimb Championship
The Qld Hillclimb Championships were held over the weekend with practice on Friday and competition on Saturday and Sunday. Entrants got plenty of runs in over the weekend.
After a week of rain, the 2026 championship event at the Mount Cotton circuit was run in fine weather. Held over three days with practice on Friday then competition runs on Saturday and Sunday, the title event was held on the 1271 metres track configuration.
Current Australia Champion and defending State champion Dean Amos secured the 2026 title with a best run of 49.49 seconds. Dean was driving his Nicholson McLaren V8 powered Gould GR55B.
Second place went to Ross Mackay driving his 1300 cc Macspec 024 with a best run of 51.41 seconds with Warwick Hutchinson in his turbocharged Rotary powered OMS 28 claimed third spot recording a 51.83 seconds.
Rounding out the top ten were Brett Bull (turbocharged Kawasaki engined BBMHC, 52.52), Neil Lewis (Fly-001, 53.36), Connor Tebble (Speads RM11, 54.27), Paul van Wijk (OMS Hornet, 55.66), Luke Weiks (Empire 001, 55.80), Camm Morris (750cc engine La Base Crosskart, 56.81), Mick Harders (300 cc Esprei KZ Superkart, 56.98).
The contest between Cody Collins and Tim Blake both driving Subaru WRX turbos went down to the final and thirteenth run. Collins needing to bridge a 0.33 second gap to claim the Vince Appleby award for fastest sedan. Cody ran a 57.27 to claim the win from Tim whose best run was a 57.74 time.
Quick times for sedans were set by Tyson Cowie (Es**rt 59.67) Gavin Taylor (VW Golf, 59.80), Steven Hampton (Mitsubishi Evo X, 59.93), Adrian Purcell (Subaru WRX, 60.02), Ken Graham (Datsun 1600 SSS, 61.44), Hannah Youd (Honda Civic Type R, 62.64) and Brendan Merrick (Datsun 120Y turbo, 62.79).
Quickest sports car and winner of the Glyn Scott award for fastest time by a sports car was Michael Larymore in his Toyota MR2 turbocharged with a best run of 58.42 seconds.
Times were set by other sports cars were Terry Sproston (Aussie Race Car, 62.39), Ainsley Fitzgerald (Arrow Clubman, 62.97), Ben Stevens (Lotus Elise, 63.45), Jim Heymer (Farrel L Clubman, 63.96), Brad Stratton (Mazda MX5, 64.27) with Denis Cotton (Porsche 914, 76.55).
Winners in the Historic Groups went to Brian Melbourne (Historic Rally Cars, Ford Es**rt), Ross Rundle (Group F for Formula Ford prior 1989, Reynard FF82), Paul Shergold (Group N for cars prior to 1972, up to 2000 ccs, Ford Cortina Mark 2), Glen Wesener (Group N over 2001 ccs, Holden Torana GTR XU1), Barry Campbell (Group T for production Sports cars up to 1981, Bowell Mark 7) and over. Winner of the Hamilton Trophy for the best performance of an Historic vehicle was Glen Wesener.
Five lady competitors had entered the event. The Cottons Creations Fastest Lady award was won by Hannah Youd in her Honda Civic type R in 62.64 seconds with Natalie Fossey (450 cc Arrow kart, 67.41), Julie Huynh (VW Golf R, 67.47), Krystal Cunningham (Toyota Celica, 68.85) with Lily Schofield recording a 72.35 run in her Toyota Celica 72.35 seconds.

Hamilton Trophy for the Best Performance by an Historic Vehicle: Glen Wesener
Cottons Creations Fastest Lady: Hannah Youd
